WACO, Texas – Baylor softball delivered another dramatic finish Sunday afternoon, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 3-2 walk-off victory over Utah at Getterman Stadium.
After squaring up multiple balls throughout the day with little to show for it, the Bears finally got the breaks they needed in their final at-bat. Trailing 2-1 with two outs, Baylor capitalized on Utah miscues to complete the comeback and earn the series win.
The win keeps the Bears (26-20, 9-9) in sixth place in a race for one of the top eight spots to earn a berth in the Big 12 Tournament. BU has a one-game lead over Arizona State (35-13, 8-10) for seventh and a two-game lead over Iowa State (27-18, 7-11) (with a tiebreaker) for eighth. With the loss, Utah(30-17-1, 6-11-1) is now a half game out of eighth.
RUNDOWN
After a couple of body blows by both teams in the first two innings, Utah broke through in the third with a two-run homer off the bat of Danika Wilson.
Baylor answered in the bottom half, stringing together three hits as Amber Toven delivered an RBI single to right to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
>From there, it became a pitcher’s duel. Peyton Tanner settled in the circle, scattering five hits while working around five walks and holding Utah scoreless over the final four innings with another superb outing, allowing just the two earned runs.
After two quick outs in the seventh, Gianna Gusman sparked the rally with a single down the left-field line. Brooklyn Carter followed with a strikeout, but reached safely when Utah’s Kennedy Proctor threw the ball away on the dropped third strike, allowing the inning to continue.
After making a spectacular diving catch earlier in the game, Sa’Mya Jones put a ball in play that was misplayed at short, allowing Gusman to tie the game. As the play unraveled, Utah’s Wilson threw home, but Proctor was unable to handle the throw as Carter raced home to seal the walk-off victory for Baylor.

QUOTABLE
Baylor Head Coach Glenn Moore on the importance of winning this series— “We have a paper-thin margin of error for us to even get to the Big 12 tournament. This series was a must-win series, and it's hard to win right now. To be able to gain some momentum is huge. The teams that we have in front of us can only help us. We need that kind of opportunity. We need to play better than we have played. We need to do some things better against the competition coming ahead, but this was a must-win series for us. You want to be greedy and get all three, but the goal this weekend — at a bare minimum — was to win the series. We did that. It was by the skin of our teeth, but we did it.”
Moore on the last at-bat for Jones — “I judge by how I feel, not necessarily numbers a lot, I think I've said that before. When [Sa’Mya’s] in the box, there's nobody right now that I feel more confident about. Now [Gianna Gusman] is growing on me, but I feel like something's going to happen when Sa’Mya’s in the box. You've got speed, you've got a good bit of power, and good solid contact every time she's up there and makes something. It was good to get her back up to the box with two outs. You're down to your nine hole, so you've got to get a couple of batters on, and she's the one that you would expect to be able to make something happen like that.”
Sa’Mya Jones on coming through in the final at-bat — “I'm so ecstatic right now, and I'm just so proud of this team. We came out here with a plan and executed it. We picked each other up constantly, and I'm just proud of the fight that we had.”
Jones on the importance of the series win — “It means a lot. We’ve come up short a few times. We've done our jobs at times, and it just didn't go our way, but I'm just glad we came back and competed and got the job done this time.”
