WACO, Texas – Baylor softball suffered an 8-2 setback to Utah on Saturday afternoon in a stop-and-start contest that featured nearly 90 minutes of weather delays at Getterman Stadium.
In a game defined by shifting momentum, the Bears trailed 3-2 into the sixth inning before lightning halted play for one hour and 10 minutes.
Baylor briefly regained control out of the delay, with a strong 1-2-3 inning by Lexi Warncke, but Utah capitalized late, scoring five runs with two outs in the seventh to pull away and seal the win.
RUNDOWN
Utah struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a Baylor error before an RBI single put the Utes ahead 1-0.
BU responded in the bottom half with its best offensive stretch of the day. Faith Piper opened the inning with a single before Olivia Buettner roped an RBI double to right-center. Abi Flores followed with a double of her own, plating the go-ahead run and giving the Bears a 2-1 advantage.
The Utes answered immediately in the third with a solo home run to even the score, and added another run in the fifth on a solo shot to take a 3-2 lead.
After the lengthy lightning delay in the sixth inning, Lexi Warncke returned to the circle and retired Utah in order, keeping Baylor within striking distance with two more cracks at the plate.
After Baylor could not capitalize on scoring chances in the sixth, Utah broke the game open in the seventh with two outs. A walk and hit-by-pitch extended the inning before a two-RBI single pushed the lead to 5-2. Moments later, a three-run home run capped the five-run outburst, stretching the lead to 8-2.
Baylor was unable to respond in the bottom half, as Utah closed out the contest to even the series.

QUOTABLE
Baylor Head Coach Glenn Moore on the stop-and-start nature of the game — “We had so many opportunities with the runners in scoring position and producers in the box. [Anna Reimers] shut us down, so I tip my hat to her. I was frustrated on our side, of course, but sometimes you’ve got to give credit to the pitcher. It was a game that was difficult to get the rhythm going, but more often than not when you have a delay, the momentum shifts to the team that's losing, and I've seen that 80-90% of the time it seems like, we had opportunities to come out and make that happen, we had something cooking there in the sixth, but we couldn't push across the run.”
