BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Carding one of the team’s two sub-par rounds of the week, junior Davis Ovard recorded four birdies in a round of 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to help the Baylor men finish in the middle of the pack at the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club.
The Bears shot 7-over 295 in the closing round to finish 10th with a 54-hole total of 21-over 885, just three shots out of eighth place in the 19-team tournament.
Clemson won the team title with a 20-under 844 total, two shots ahead of eighth-ranked Texas Tech (18-under, 846). The host West Virginia team was third at 16-under 848, followed by TCU and sixth-ranked Oklahoma State at 9-under 855.
“Pete Dye Golf Club was a terrific golf course and test . . . extremely challenging,” interim head coach Ryan Murphy said. “We had some nice rounds this week, although our finish was not what we had in mind. We will get some rest once back in Waco, and then our preparation for Prairie Dunes will begin.”
After an opening-round score of 7-over 79, Ovard put together rounds of 72 and 71 to tie for 47th at 6-over 222. UConn transfer Alex Heard posted his team-best fifth top-25 finish, shooting 2-over 218 to finish 25th, while senior Jonas Appel tied for 39th at 5-over 221 and Evan Vo 57th at 8-over 224.
“Very solid golf from Alex again this week. Proud of his effort,” Murphy said. “Also happy with Davis’s final two rounds after a slow start. And Jonas and Evan contributed some nice rounds as well.”
Senior Sam Dossey also bounced back after a tough opening round, shooting 75-76 the last two rounds and tying for 91stat 17-over 233.
Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout, the third-ranked player in the country, edged Clemson’s Thomas Higgins by one shot to win medalist honors at 11-under 205.
After closing the regular season, Baylor will play in the Big 12 Championship April 27-29 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
