LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor softball suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss at No. 23 Kansas on Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

The seesaw affair saw the Jayhawks deliver a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Baylor (24-18, 7-8 Big 12) showed resilience throughout, jumping out to an early lead and battling back late, but Kansas (29-12, 10-5 Big 12) capitalized in the final frame to secure the series finale.

RUNDOWN
The Bears struck first in the second inning behind a solo home run from Kaygen Marshall, her eighth of the season, before Gianna Gusman sparked a two-out rally with a bunt single and stolen base. Brooklyn Carter followed with an RBI single to give Baylor a 2-0 advantage.

Kansas answered in the bottom half with a pair of solo home runs to even the score, but Baylor quickly regained momentum in the third. Amber Toven and Leah Cran opened the inning with back-to-back hits, and Marshall delivered again with an RBI single to put the Bears back in front, 3-2.

The Jayhawks took advantage of a Baylor miscue in the fifth, using a fielding error and situational hitting to plate a pair of runs and move ahead, 4-3. Baylor continued to fight, however, as Averie Waddell launched a solo home run in the fifth to knot the game at four.

Kansas put the pressure on in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of walks, and after a close play at the plate cut down the go-ahead run, the Jayhawks delivered the decisive blow. September Flanagan lined a single down the right-field line to bring home the winning run and seal the 5-4 walk-off victory.

GAME NOTES

  *   Baylor leads the all-time series with the Jayhawks 48-37.
  *   Kaygen Marshall moved into sixth place by herself for the most homeruns by a freshman in program history
  *   Marshall picked up a pair of hits on Saturday, for her second-straight multi-hit game, and her fifth of the season
  *   Saturday was Marshall’s seventh multi-RBI game of the season and her first since March 31st against UIW
  *   Marshall has now reached base in a career-best nine-straight games
  *   Averie Waddell connected on her third homerun of the season, her first since March 20th at Texas
  *   Brooklyn Carter tallied a hit in her seventh-straight game, building on her season high
  *   Leah Cran picked up a hit in a fifth-straight game, the second-longest streak of her career

Baylor will return home for a big midweek contest against No. 13 Texas A&M on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear gold on Wednesday as it will be Baylor’s “Go Gold” game.
