LAWRENCE, Kan. – Unable to sustain a fast start that saw them two points out of the top 10 halfway through the 6K race, the Baylor women fell back to 14th in Friday’s Big 12 Cross Country Championship at Rim Rock Farm.

Sophomore Ruth Kimeli got out with the front pack that was chasing record-setting BYU freshman Jane Hedengren, running a 5:04.5 first mile and was in 10th in the field of 140 runners. Still keeping pace at the 3K mark, sitting in 14th place, Kimeli ran the last half in over 11 minutes and fell back to 38th overall at 20:43.3.

Hedengren ran a blistering time of 18:29.6, beating the previous record by more than 30 seconds and winning the race by almost 45 seconds. BYU also won the women’s team title with 38 points, placing all seven of its runners in the top 20.

Sophomores Ella Perry (22:17.1) and Sally Corder (22:29.8) were the Bears’ next two finishers, with freshmen Rickeisha Simms (22:40.8) and Rachel Haws rounding out the scoring runners. The Bears defeated Arizona and Arizona State and finished just one point behind TCU.

Hoping to challenge Kansas State and Arizona State, the Baylor men finished a distant 13th (out of 13 teams) with 398 points. Baylor’s top runner in all four meets this season, sophomore Jack Sterrett placed 85th in the 8K race with a time of 25:51.3, followed by Straton Miller (26:08.8) and Caden Biltz (26:41.5).

With all five scoring runners finishing in the top seven, second-ranked Oklahoma State beat No. 1 Iowa State, 20-43, to claim its 14th Big 12 title.

Next up for the Baylor men and women will be the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 14 in Fayetteville, Ark.
