BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Running for the first time in three weeks, the Baylor men’s and women’s cross country squads will compete in the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Friday at Texas A&M’s Dale Watts Cross Country Course.
The men’s 8K race kicks things off at 8:30 a.m., followed by the women’s 6K at 9:15, with Baylor and the host A&M team joined by 36 other schools.
“We’re excited for the opportunity to race against a great field,” Baylor coach David Barnett said. “The teams are looking forward to executing their best races and building momentum for the championship season.”
In their last time out, the Baylor men placed 25th at the Gans Creek Classic. Sophomore Jack Sterrett led the way for the second-straight meet with an 8-kilometer time of 25:08, while junior Straton Miller was clipping at his heels with a career-best time of 25:21.0.
On the women’s side, sophomore Ruth Kimeli made her season debut running as an individual in the elite Gold Invitational, placing 95th with a 6K time of 20:48.4. Sophomore Ella Perry led the way in the Black Invitational race with a 22:09.9 clocking, but the Bears did not finish enough runners to score as a team.
After being shorthanded in the first two meets, Barnett will compete with seven men and 12 women in the Arturo Barrios. Sterrett and Miller will be joined by senior Ethan Wrase, junior Nolan Keenan, sophomore Caden Biltz and freshmen Caleb McCarver and Amon Malakwen, who will make his collegiate cross country debut.
The women, running at full force for the first time, will have Kimeli and Perry as the frontrunners. Sophomore Sally Corder and freshmen Rachel Haws and Evanna Jacobsen are also back in the lineup and will be joined by grad student Abby Morris, juniors Kat Helmer and Ryan Vasquez, sophomores Lucy Benton, Regina Paseiro-Garduno and Rickeisha Simms and freshman Mason Murray.
Included in the large field are Big 12 teams Houston, TCU and Texas Tech. along with Oklahoma, LSU, Ohio State and women’s only teams from SMU, Tulsa and Wake Forest.
