WACO, Texas – No. 23 Baylor soccer used goals from Hallie Augustyn, Kai Hayes and Olivia Hess, and a shutout from Azul Alvarez, to post a 3-0 win over Texas State in the first round of the NCAA Soccer Tournament, hosted by the Bears on Friday night at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Complex.
Baylor (13-4-4) used a first-half goal and a pair of tallies in the second stanza to post the three-goal margin over 2025 Sun Belt Conference Champions Texas State (10-4-7). Hayes put the Bears up at the half with a 36th minute strike, Hess pushed the margin to a pair in the 61st minute and Hallie Augystyn put the match out of reach in the 66th minute.
Alvarez starred in between the pipes with her 10th shutout of the year, making three saves in her 13th win of the year. Alvarez entered the postseason with a 0.85 goals-against average.
Baylor advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, with this portion of the bracket set to be hosted by No. 1 seed Notre Dame (14-1-3), who opens postseason play vs. UIC (8-7-6) in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. If Notre Dame wins that matchup and retains its host bid, the Bears would travel to South Bend to play the Wisconsin (14-5-2), who rallied from behind to best Western Michigan on Friday.
Texas State keeper Brooklyn Escobar made five saves.
This marked the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools, with BU owning a 6-0-2 record.
Baylor had the first real chance in the match in the fifth minute, as Oliva Hess made a run down the near sideline and fed Lauren Omholt, who lofted a gorgeous cross into the six-yard box for Callie Conrad, whose leaping header just missed high.
In the 18th minute, Hess owned the ball from about 24 yards out and after a spinning move to maintain possession, her no-look shot forced a save that drove Escobar to her knees.
Again, the Bears challenged Escobar in the 28th minute as Aryanna Jimison, fresh onto the pitch, fired a shot from 20 yards out that forced a waist-high save from the TXST netminder.
In the 36th minute, Baylor struck first, as Theresa McCullough played a ball to Tyler Isgrig, who lofted a cross into the box to find the leaping dome of Kai Hayes, who finished in the bottom left of the goal past Escobar. It was the fourth goal of the year for Hayes, who has 10 points on the year. The assist for Isgrig was her eighth and it marked the sixth of the year for McCullough.
Isgrig has 25 assists in her three-year Baylor career, ranking fourth-best in school history. Her eight assists on the year ties her 2024 total as the eight-best in single-season history. Isgrig has a career-high 26 points in 2025, ranking tied for ninth in BU history, and her 69 career points ranks sixth best in school annals.
In the 56th minute, the Bears tasted a second goal as McCullough fired an effort that clipped off the crossbar.
A minute later, Isgrig had a run down the far sideline and unleashed a 30-foot shot that sailed wide of the goal mouth.
In the 61st minute, following a foul, forced by Conrad, from about 25 yards out at the far corner of the 18-yard box, the Bears took a free kick with a short play from Isgrig, who touched it to Hess, who launched a hard-hit with her left foot that forced a leaping, two-handed save from Escobar. The ball went back into play and Hallie Augustyn cleaned it up from inside the six-yard box with a finish in the back of the middle of the net. It marked the second goal of the year for Hallie Augustyn, a senior defender from Flower Mound, Texas.
Hess stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute as Lauren Omholt made a run down the far sideline and sent a low-lining cross into the middle of the 18-yard box, finding Hess from about 10 yards out, with the freshman settling the ball with her left foot before uncorking a missile with her left foot that soared into the upper corner of the net, too firm to be stopped by a single mitt from Escobar. It marked the third goal of the year from Hess and the third assist of 2025 from Omholt.
Texas State had its best chance in the 68th minute, as a cross found an open Jade Bowe, who drilled a shot that promoted a right-handed punch save from Alvarez, with the Bears skirting the danger of the corner kick to stay up 3-0.
Baylor had a chance to add on in the 82nd minute but misfired on penalty kick chance.
