NEW ORLEANS – Baylor track & field senior Nathaniel Ezekiel has landed a spot for the second consecutive update to The Bowerman Watch List.
The Bowerman<https://www.ustfccca.org/the-bowerman> – collegiate track & field's version of the Heisman Trophy – began in 2009 and is presented each year to the most outstanding male and female athletes in the nation. The trophy is named after famed Oregon head coach, Bill Bowerman.
The Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year had a successful indoor campaign, ending as a runner-up in the men’s 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships, just 0.01 seconds short of gold. Ezekiel is now an eight-time All-American in indoor and outdoor nationals.
The Delta State, Nigeria, native is the first Bear, among a historic list of alumni from 'Quarter-Mile U', to race for a sub-45 second mark in the 400m event. At the Big 12 Indoor Championships, Ezekiel ran a 44.74 time, claiming the title while also breaking the conference meet record, Baylor indoor program record and the African indoor record.
In the 4x400 relay, Ezekiel ran the best final leg among the field at 45.29 to come back from being in fourth place and take home the gold. The relay team's first-place finish marked the first title won for the men's indoor relay since 2019.
His 44.74 mark concluded as the No. 2 time in the World at the end of the indoor season.
Still receiving votes on the men’s side is Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi, who looks to continue his outdoor success as a three-time All-American and Big 12 Champion in the men’s javelin.
On the women’s side, Alexis Brown enters as receiving votes for the first time in her career. Brown recently made history as the first Baylor athlete, male or female, to win a national championship in the long jump event. Competing on college track and field's biggest stage at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Brown put a huge exclamation on what's been a phenomenal indoor season, winning the program's first national championship in the long jump with a school- and facility-record mark of 22 feet, 7 ¾ inches.
The next watch list update is scheduled to occur Wednesday, April 16 (women) and Thursday, April 17 (men). Baylor track & field is back in competition this weekend at the Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge, La. from March 28-29.
