WACO, Texas – No. 17 Baylor men’s tennis rolled to an efficient 4-0 sweep over No. 32 Arizona State, in the conference lid-lifter for both teams, on Friday night at the Hurd Tennis Center.

No. 17 Baylor (14-7, 1-0 Big 12 Conference) avenged a 4-3 loss on Sunday that snapped a six-match winning streak. No. 32 Arizona State (9-7) posted a 4-3 win in a nearly five-hour match in Indian Wells, Calif., that was the finale of the non-conference season.

Just six days later, against the Sun Devils again, the Bears dominated their way to a 4-0 sweep and had leads on another court, with the match trending towards third sets on two other courts.

The Bears won the doubles point, getting a 6-3 win from Zsombor Velcz and Louis Bowden on court 3. No. 17 Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen earned a 6-2 win on court 1 to clinch the point.

Baylor immediately jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an efficient 6-3, 6-0 win from Alexandru Chirita on court 4, taking down Matic Dimic, a graduate student from Lovenia.

The Bears had opened with wins in the first set on court 2 behind Brostrom Poulsen, Velcz on court 3 and Luc Koenic on court 5, in addition to Chirita’s first-set win to jump out early.

Koenig was the next to get a point on the board, posting a 6-4, 6-3 win on court 5.

This left court 2, with Brostrom Poulsen leading 6-4, 5-2, and Velcz on court 3, with a 6-3, 5-3 lead.

Over on court 6, Miladinovic was trailing 5-7, 2-2 and No. 44 Devin Badenhorst had bounced back in the second set, trailing 5-7, 5-2 vs. No. 110 Mathis Bondaz.

It was Brostrom Poulsen who clinched the win, posting the 6-4, 6-2 winner.

The Bears will return to action on Sunday, hosting a doubleheader at the Hurd Tennis Center, including a conference clash with No. 15 Arizona at 1 p.m. and a nightcap vs. UT Dallas at 6 p.m.

QUOTING WOODSON

“This was important for number of reasons. It’s the first Big 12 match, we want to get off on the right foot. We have a very sour taste in our mouths from five days ago. It was one of the longest matches that I’ve ever been a part of. We had lot of opportunities and we had lots of fight but we dug ourselves too big of a hole the last time we played. This whole week the guys have really been on edge – we want to take this opportunity and make a statement. Coming in, it is different, different conditions, different situation. It’s more important because it’s the Big 12, and different lineups. We had a bunch of different matchups out there and you never know how the guys are going to handle that. They probably felt like they should win but I was really impressed. We did a great job throughout the match.”
