WACO, Texas – Baylor women’s tennis remained undefeated at home on Friday night, besting the Colorado Buffaloes, 4-2, at the Hurd Tennis Center with a Hounds at the Hurd crowd of over 150 fans and five canines.
Baylor (13-2, 4-1 Big 12) earned the doubles point and responded after Colorado (6-7, 0-5 Big 12) took all six first sets in singles to clinch the match with victories at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles courts.
THE RUNDOWN
Zuzanna Kubacha and Wenfei Yu picked up their fourth-straight win in doubles play, dominating their court, 6-3, over the Colorado paring of Lera Alexin and Mila Stanojevic. CU had a quick answer at the No. 3 doubles spot, besting the 89th-ranked Ema Bubalo and Pia Rebc, 7-6(4), in a breaker to force the decision to Court One.
With the doubles point down to a 6-6 tie at the No. 1 Court in a bout between 15th-ranked Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea and the 19th-ranked Anya Nelson and Rixt van der Werff, the Bears were victorious with a 7-4 tiebreak to clinch the point.
The Buffs came out swinging in singles play, taking all six first sets, but the Bears were down but not out. Quickly scoring, Courts Two and One went the way of CU as van der Werff beat Kostenko, 6-2, 6-3, and Stanojevic beat Tiglea, 6-2, 6-3.
Baylor turned the page and picked up steam as Colorado took the lead, taking the next three points in matches that came down to third sets.
85th-ranked Dong had her sixth-straight singles win, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, over Betina Tokac and then Kennedy Gibbs responded from a 6-4 deficit in the first set, to go 6-2, 7-6(2), in a fighting finish to put the Bears back on top of the match.
In a race to the end, Yu at Court Five and Nanaka Sato at Court Six were trading points back and forth as the clinch loomed, but Yu was the first to finish and give the Bears their 13th win of the season, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.
