Baylor WGOLF Continues Spring Slate at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
BU Newcomer Malena Castro leads the way for Bears in the first round
HILTON HEAD, S.C.— Baylor women’s golf finished in 17th after round one of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Monday.

Freshman Malena Castro led the way for the Bears in the first round, shooting 3-over 74. Following close behind was Bridget Boczar at 5-over 76.

Arkansas holds the team lead at 4-over 288, while the Bears sit at 20-over 304, just a stroke behind Kentucky and eight shots out of the top 10.

THE RUNDOWN

Castro landed two sets of bogeys on each side of the course, holes No. 3 and 6 on the front nine and Nos. 15 and 17 on the back nine. The freshman carded one birdie on No. 10 to tie for 36th after round 1.

With an up-and-down first half, Boczar recorded a pair of birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to finish off the front nine. Carding only one blemish on the back nine, a bogey at No.10, Boczar finished the round to tie for 51st.

BaiMai Seema started out with a birdie on No. 6 and then carded consecutive bogeys on Nos. 11, 12 and 13. Shooting 6-over 77 for the day, the senior is tied for 61st.

Sera Hasegawa also shot 6-over 77 in round 1, carding birdies on Nos. 6 and 12. A triple bogey at the par-4 14th left Hasegawa tied for 61st.

Starting the round with a set of bogeys on the front nine at Nos. 1 and 4, Silje Ohma shot 6-over 77 for the round. After starting the back nine with bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11, Ohma closed out the day with a birdie at No. 18 to tie for 61st.

HIGHLIGHTS

●      Bridget Boczar tied for 1st on par-3 scoring with an average of 2.50 at 2-under
●      Malena Castro tied for 2nd on par-4 scoring with an average of 3.91 at 1-under
QUOTABLE
Head coach Jay Goble on the team's performance— “Today was a tough day for the Bears. I feel like we were prepared and ready to have a great day, but this game humbles you quickly. We will regroup and get ready to have a much better day tomorrow.”
