WACO, Texas – Baylor women’s tennis had a big night at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, taking care of Brown, 6-1, in the first home match in 15 days.

Baylor (8-1) earned its eighth doubles point of the season and took singles wins at every court but No. 3 to roll over the Bears of Brown (2-5).

THE RUNDOWN

In rapid match finishing on the third doubles court, Baylor struck fast behind Zuzanna Kubacha and Wenfei Yu, as the pair picked up a 6-1 defeat of Anne Moody and Anne Yang. Finishing next, the Brown Bears got their first win of the evening at No. 1 doubles with Addison Ahlstrom and Lindsey Hofflander over the BU pairing of Cristina Tiglea and Kennedy Gibbs, 6-3, the two’s first match together since the ITA Texas Regional Championship in October.

Clinching the eighth doubles point of the season in nine matches, Sierra Berry and Na Dong picked up their third-straight win together, defeating Ali Maguy and Hannah Shen, 6-4.

In singles, No. 117 Kubacha was the first of two back-to-back finishing dominant matches, defeating Hofflander, 6-1, 6-2. Next door, Tiglea gave BU its third point in a big way, taking down Gabby Soliman, -6-1, 6-0.

Clinching the match, Yu faced Bella Hu at the fifth singles court and clawed her way to a 6-1, 6-4 win for the Baylor Bears to beat the Brown Bears.

Continuing play, Kennedy Gibbs picked up a straight-set win over Sari Woo, besting the Bear, 7-5, 6-4. 85th-ranked Na Dong suffered the first loss of her collegiate dual-match career, 7-6(4), 2-6, 12-10, to end her nine-match winning streak that dated back to October 11, 2024.

Last out, freshman Wenfei Yu fought through a second-set loss to all but dominate a 10-point tiebreak, winning, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6, over Dani Ben-Abraham.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Joey Scrivano

On today’s match…

“I am just really proud of this team. They compete so hard. They just love each other, they love their coaches and they love Baylor. And it shows when they compete, they really bring it every time they're out on the court.”

On the success this year in doubles play…

“Doubles, just like the singles, comes down to a few points here and there. When you have a team that's so committed to each other and committed to playing the right way, they trust their coaches, they trust the system, and all those things add up in the end. That's why we've been able to win some all of these doubles points. They're never easy. They've all come down to the wire, and I think that's the difference.”

Senior Cristina Tiglea

On bouncing back to dominate singles…

“It just felt so good to be back on our own courts, and I just wanted to give my best. I know that doubles didn’t go the right way, but I had to set up my mind right and I just wanted to enjoy every moment on the court, especially next to my teammates. It was fun today.”

Sophomore Zuzanna Kubacha

On being back home…

“We did a great job today. My doubles court way pretty quick. We stuck to our system and that’s why it was good. It was amazing to be home, playing at home with all the people around us who we love, who love us and who came to support us. That made a huge difference. It always feels great to play for my team, and for my family. The team is my family.”

WHAT’S NEXT

BU stays in Waco to welcome Washington State on Friday at noon.
