MISSOULA, Mont. – Baylor soccer battled to its second straight draw to open the 2025 season, playing Denver to a 0-0 result on Thursday afternoon in the Rumble in the Rockies, hosted by the University of Montana.

The Bears (0-0-2) controlled the pace from the opening whistle, piling up 23 shots, 10 shots on goal and 10 corner kicks. Denver (1-0-2) netminder Alina Santos wouldn’t let BU sneak by with 10 saves to keep the match level.

Senior goalkeeper Azul Alvarez needed just two saves to post her 10th career shutout, her seventh shutout coming in a full 90-minute match.

THE RUNDOWN

Baylor came out on the front foot, outshooting Denver 9-2 in the first half. In a near-breakaway for Lauren Omholt, the Patriots needed all they could get to stop her, seeing a red card against Nora Zelazny to put Denver one player down in just the 22nd minute.

Baylor ended the first half with four shots on goal, with their best look nearly finding the back of the net off a boot from freshman Olivia Hess in the 33rd minute.

With a great chance in the second half, Kai Hayes was able to get past Denver’s Santos in the 79th minute, but the play was called offside.

BU earned eight corners in the second half, finishing with 10 overall, marking the fifth double-digit corner kick performance of the Michelle Lenard era.

HIGHLIGHTS

  * Emerson Garcia and Aryanna Jimison got their first starts of the season and as Bears, with Garcia’s start being the first of her college career.
  * Baylor’s 23 shots matched up to just five from Denver.
  * 10 shots on goal were the most since equaling the decade mark against Houston on September 29, 2024, a match that also held the last time the Bears hit 20 shots in a game (26).
  * 10 corner kicks matches last season’s high against Utah on October 20, 2024.
