ORLANDO, Fla. – Baylor track & field had a short group in the first day of competition at the Knights Invite in Orlando at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex but came out with multiple top-10 finishes.
THE RUNDOWN
Jasmine Gryne was the front runner for Friday’s competition in the 400-meter hurdles, earning her first gold medal finish since 2022. Gryne ran a 57.56 mark, nearly matching her PR set the week prior at the Michael Johnson Invitational by tenths of a second. Gryne currently ranks 21st on the NCAA outdoor performance list in the 400mH.
In the 200m, veterans Mariah Ayers and Summer Sergeant both grabbed top-10 finishes, finishing just mere hundredths of second behind each other. Ayers finished fifth at 24.02 (0.2 m/s) while Sergeant was right behind in seventh at 24.07 (-0.8 m/s). On the men’s side, Abbas Ali led for the men with an eighth place finish at 21.42 (1.3 m/s).
In the field, Iyanna Webb had a successful day in the long jump as she secured as second place finish and matched her PR of 20-0.25 (-1.5 m/s).
In Austin at the Texas Invitational, Tenly Kuhn grabbed her second first place finish of the season with a 14-4 mark in the pole vault. Lillianna Ifft also finished third at 13-4.25. In the men’s pole vault, Nate Butler earned a tie for third place at 15-3.
In the men’s shot put, JL Van Rensburg threw a monster throw of 62-0.5, the No. 2 mark in BU history, to finish in fourth. The freshman now sits at No. 25 in the NCAA outdoor performance list.
On the track, Ruth Kimeli nearly matched her PR in the 1500m with a 4:33.63 time and a third place finish.
MIKE ON THE MIC
“Day One of the Knights Invite, a very small meet,” said head coach Michael Ford. “Definitely want to start out with Jasmine Gryne winning the 400 hurdles, running close to a PR today. She looked good and had a good race today. Definitely looking forward to watching her run again, maybe at Big 12s. Iyanna in long jump got second. She had a fairly good sequence of jumps. We thought she should have measured the last jump, but overall she had a solid meet and was close to her college PR. Another than that, everything else was good.
“I thought the women’s 200 ladies of Mariah Ayers with a 24-run. She’s coming along after have a baby. Summer Sergeant had a good run too, running 24-flat. For the guys, Aren and Ali ran well. Got a little windy on the turn, but overall, we had a good meet. We have more competing tomorrow, but the weather is great.”
