HOUSTON, Texas – Baylor Softball defeated Houston in its series opener, 5-3, Friday night at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears got on the board early against the Cougars, after Brooklyn Carter singled to lead off the game and stole second base. Already on second, Carter came home to score after a single from Turiya Coleman and an error by the Houston left fielder. BU added its second run after Shaylon Govan walked and Abi Flores reached on a fielding error to bring home Coleman. Making it a 3-0 game, Presleigh Pilon hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield which scored Goc=van from third.
Keeping Houston off of the board in the first and second inning, Baylor added on to its lead in the top of the third.
After a walk was issued to Govan in the third, Flores launched her first-career home run over the wall in right-center to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
The Baylor defense worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth to hold on to the 5-0 lead.
Houston plated an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth after a throwing error had a runner come home.
After a quiet sixth inning for both squads, Houston added two runs to their total in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-3 game but a game-ending strikeout from Lillie Walker gave Baylor the victory.
