TUCSON, Ariz. – Baylor women’s tennis picked up a dominant win on the road at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, defeating the University of Arizona, 4-0.
Baylor (17-4, 8-3 Big 12) moves to 7-2 on the road this season in their win over the Wildcats (16-8, 6-4 Big 12) after taking the doubles point with singles wins at Courts No. 3, 4 and 5.
THE RUNDOWN
The 43rd-ranked Court One pairing of Cristina Tiglea and Liubov Kostenko completed the dominant win over Josie Usereau and former Bear Danielle Tuhten, 6-1, to get the momentum of the afternoon rolling. Shortly after, Sierra Berry and Na Dong clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 decision at the second court over Martyna Ostrzygalo and Zoya Chulak.
Going unfinished, Kenendy Gibbs and Zuzanna Kubacha just took the lead over Midori Castillo-Meza and Belen Nevenhoven, 6-5.
In singles play, the Bears took four of the six available first sets and were able to roll to three wins to seal the match for the green and gold.
Nanaka Sato made it win No. 9 in a row with her 6-3, 6-4 result over Tuhten to give BU its second point of the match, picking up the 18th win of her introductory collegiate season. Court Four gave the Bears their third point of the day as No. 108 Dong won her match with an ace over Tanvi Narendran, 6-4, 6-1, in her 10th consecutive victory.
Kubacha had a 6-3 6-3 win over Ostrzygalo at the third court for the match winner, giving BU its 17 win of the season with a pair of regular-season matchups remaining.
Remaining but unfinished, Kostenko split sets with 50th-ranked Usereau, Tiglea was battling through a 4-4 second set after dropping the first and Gibbs was fighting for a second-set victory at 6-5 before the clinch.
WHAT’S NEXT
BU completes its Arizona trip with a stop in Tempe to face the No. 38 Arizona State Sun Devils at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday.
