WACO, Texas – Former Baylor men’s tennis player Matias Soto has been selected as one of five players to represent his home nation of Chile in the Davis Cup, known as the World Cup of Tennis.

Soto will compete for Chile in the 112th edition of the prestigious event, including Alejandro Tabilo, Nicolas Jarry, Cristian Garin and Tomas Barrios. Team Chile will be playing on the Group Stage as one of 16 teams across the nation.

Soto is making his first appearance in the Davis Cup and will compete from September 10-15 at the Hengqin Tennis Center in Zhuhai, China, facing off against Teams USA, Germany and Slovakia. If Team Chile advances through the Group Stage, they will move on as one of four teams to the Knockout Stage and compete in November in Málaga, Spain.

Soto, a native of Copiapo, Chile, joined the Bears in January of 2018. Through the next four years, Soto would go on and record a career record of 80-35 (63-24 dual record) and lead the Bears to national prominence. Soto was a member of the iconic 2021 team, where he was crowned 2021 Big 12 Regular Season Champion, Big 12 Tournament Champion and member of 2021 NCAA Finalist Baylor team. With the help of Soto, he led the Bears to earn their first No. 1 overall ranking since 2005.

Notable alums for Baylor that will also be participating in the Davis Cup are Adrian Boitan (2018-22) for Team Romania and Charlie Broom (2020-21) as an alternate for Team Great Britain.

Broom will serve as an alternate player for Team Great Britain who will be one of the 16 teams competing in the Group Stage finals. Great Britain was entered as a wild card team alongside Spain. They will play on September 10-15 as hosts at Manchester Arena in Manchester, Great Britain against Teams Canada, Finland and Argentina.

Boitan will be competing alongside Team Romania in the World Group II from September 13-15 as the host at Polyvalent Hall in Craiova, Romania. Twenty-four teams will participate in the World Group II, in a series decided on a home and away basis.
