FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Baylor track and field’s men’s squad wrapped up their portion of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Friday evening at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville with six more tickets to the NCAA Championships in June.

Junior De’montray Callis led the surge for the Bears with three tickets of his own and the men’s meet ended with an advancing finish from the men’s 4x400-meter relay squad.

THE RUNDOWN

Callis completed a hat trick on the final day of the men’s competition, qualifying individually in the 100 and 200 meters and as a part of the 4x100-meter relay squad. Opening with Ricquan Graham, Laurenz Colbert and Kamden Jackson, Callis and the Bears secured a spot to nationals in the event clocking a 39.19-second mark for the No. 2 in the third heat.

Back on the track, Callis earned his second automatic qualification to Eugene with a third-place finish in the first heat of the 100 after 10.01 seconds, finishing behind Houston’s Louie Hinchliffe and Shaun Maswanganyi who ran 9.84 and 9.89, respectively. Just over an hour later, Callis took another automatic qualifying spot with Colbert in the 200 meters, going 20.27 and 20.35, respectively for two trips to the national championship.

Winning his heat for the fourth-straight race, Nathaniel Ezekiel booked his solo spot in the 400-meter hurdles after 49.36 seconds with the third-fastest time of the day. Ezekiel will be making his third trip to nationals in three years in the 400 hurdles.

After initially being knocked out of national-qualifying contention, the men’s 4x400 relay squad of Jackson, Francis, Nicholi Brown and Ezekiel have a lane at the NCAA Championships. With a handoff mishap, the Bears took the 16th-overall position that saw them fourth in the first heat. Due to Nebraska, the third-place finisher in Heat One, receiving a zone disqualification, the Bears moved into the heat’s third-place spot and got the automatic bid to the championship.

Joining Callis in competing in the 100 meters, Colbert and Graham clocked solid times of 10.09 and 10.12 but were two spots away from an advancing position.

Francis was the fifth-place finisher in the first heat of the open 400 meters after 45.99 seconds, just missing the cutoff for Oregon by 14-hundredths of a second.

Ukurugenzi Kojo wrapped up his time in the high jump with a 6-10 ¼ effort for 29th place in the regional competition, three clearances short of a trip to Hayward Field.
