STORYLINES

LEADING OFF

• Baylor Baseball hosts Tarleton on Tuesday for its final home midweek contest of 2024.

• With two weeks left to play, Baylor (9-15) currently sits in 11th place in the Big 12 standings, trailing Texas Tech (12-15) by 1.5 games and UCF (11-12) by 2.5 games. The top-10 teams in the conference will qualify for the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.

• Baylor's nine conference wins are its most since the 2021 season (11-13).

• Junior RHP Mason Marriott<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/mason-marriott/13001> turned in a career outing on Friday night vs. TCU, tossing 8.0 innings and surrendering just two earned runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out five.

• Sophomore LHP Ethan Calder<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/ethan-calder/12994> pitched a career-high 6.2 innings in relief on Saturday in the extra-innings loss.

• The Bears racked up 13 hits in Sunday's series finale, their 18th double-digit hitting output of the season, and had five players record multi-hit games (Apodaca, Posey, Altman, Mazoch, Castle).

• According to Pro Baseball Radar, BU faced the nation's toughest schedule through the first month of the season based on 2023's RPI and win percentage.

• Baylor plays 26 games against the 2023 RPI top-50 this season, the most in the Big 12.

• 59% of Baylor's offense (253 of 428 hits) has been produced by underclassmen or players in their first season at Baylor.

• True or redshirt freshmen have accounted for 39% of innings pitched on the mound this season (160.0 of 405.1).

MIDWEEK MATHESON

• Senior RHP Jared Matheson<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/jared-matheson/13002> gets the ball for the Bears in their final home midweek contest of 2024.

• Of Matheson's 13 career starts, 11 have come in midweek contests, including three this season.

• The Montgomery, Texas, native owns a career 2.75 ERA across 35 innings as a midweek starter (11 earned runs) and has picked up two wins, one loss and eight no-decisions.

• Matheson's best career start came last season at Tarleton, where he threw seven shutout innings and struck out five batters, while allowing just two hits and one walk and earning his first-career victory.

POSEY-ING A HUGE THREAT IN APRIL

• Fifth-year senior INF Cole Posey<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/cole-posey/13007> had a red-hot April, batting .442 (23-for-52) across 14 games on the month and leading the team with five home runs and 15 runs driven in.

• After a 4-for-4 night on Tuesday vs. UTA, Posey had reached safely in eight-straight plate appearances, becoming the second Bear to do so this season (Enzo Apodaca<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/enzo-apodaca/13013>, at BYU, April 12-13).

• Posey was inserted back into the starting lineup on April 5 at first base, a position he had never played before in his collegiate career, and promptly hit a grand slam against Incarnate Word and has yet to relinquish the starting spot.

• The journeyman from Georgetown, Texas, began the season just 1-for-17 at the plate until the month of April.

• Posey logged his first-career two-HR game on Sunday at West Virginia with blasts in each of his first two AB's, then hit his third in two games vs. the Mavericks.

BY THE NUMBERS VS. TARLETON

• Since the Texans made the jump to Division I in 2020, Baylor has won two of the three meetings between the two sides and split last season's two matchups.

• Baylor's record book shows a prior meeting in 1908 between the Bears and the Texans, with no reported score.

• BU is 6-4 in midweek games in 2024 and 15-10 under second-year head coach Mitch Thompson<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/mitch-thompson/2258>.

• The Bears are 11-14 against teams from the state of Texas this season and 20-26 in the Thompson era.
