PHOENIX, Ariz. – Baylor women’s golf shot a 3-over 291 to tie for 12th after day one at the PING/ASU Invitational on Thursday at the Papago Golf Club.

Freshman Ashleen Kaur led the Bears by shooting a 3-under 69, ending her day tied for fifth. The freshman was one of five tournament participants to card an eagle in round one.

The tournament's host, Arizona State, is in first place with an overall score of 7-under 281. On the individual side, there is a four-way tie for first between Arizona's Gile Bite Starkute, California’s Constance Fouillet, Oklahoma State’s Ellie Bushnell and Northwestern’s Ashley Yun. These athletes carded a 4-under 68s, just one shot ahead of Kaur.

THE RUNDOWN

Kaur had a bogey-free first nine, claiming an eagle on No. 15 and a birdie on No. 17. The freshman stayed consistent by carding pars on each of the next eight holes. She ended the day with a bogey at No. 8 and a birdie at No. 9 for an even-par 36 on the inward half.

Sera Hasegawa shot an even-par 72 on day one and tied for 28th individually. After seven-straight pars to begin the round, she made a bogey at No. 17 and a birdie at No. 18 to make the turn at even. She dipped into red figures with a birdie at No. 1 but dropped back to even with a bogey at No. 6.

Rosie Belsham claimed an early birdie at No. 15 but followed with two bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17. The lone bogey on her second nine came at No. 2 as she ended the day at 2-over 74, tied for 53rd.

Silje Ohma carded a 4-over 76 and tied for 65th. The sophomore bogeyed three of her first five holes of the day at Nos. 11, 12 and 13 before her first birdie at No. 15. She played the final three holes at 3-over to make the turn with a 5-over 41. Ohma bounced back and carded three birdies on No. 2, 6 and 7, with a double bogey in the mix at No. 5, to finish with a 1-under 35 on the inward half.

BaiMai Seema also ended her day with a 4-over 76. After a bogey on her opening hole of the day at No. 10, Seema settled in, making a birdie at No. 15 to turn towards her inward half at even par. The junior ran into a few bumps in her last nine, claiming four bogeys on Nos. 1, 4, 8 and 9 to finish tied for 65th place.

Yoonjeong Huh competed individually and carded an 11-over 83 to end day one tied for 92nd.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Every Bear in the lineup carded at least one birdie in the first nine holes.
  *   Kaur cards carded her fifth score in the 60s this season.
  *   Kaur’s par-5 scoring average of 4.25 tied for the second-best mark in the field on day one.
  *   Kaur’s eagle tied her with Belsham for the most eagles (4) on the team.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble — “We played tough all day today but had a little trouble at the end of the day. We are playing much better as a team, so I feel confident that we will come out swinging tomorrow and be ready to go. Ashleen played fantastic and is in a great position, just a shot back of the lead. She is ready to keep her foot on her foot on the gas and get after it again tomorrow.”

Baylor will play round two of the PING/ASU Invitational Friday morning beginning at 10:05 a.m.  CT with Seema leading off. The Bears will play alongside Oklahoma State and Arizona.
