BATON ROUGE, La. – Baylor track and field heads east to Louisiana for LSU’s Battle on the Bayou at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

Competition begins at 12:30 on Friday with the men’s hammer throw and 10 a.m. on Saturday with the women’s discus. The 4x400-meter relay, scheduled for 2:50 p.m. CT on Saturday finalizes the meet.

Members of the team’s pole vault squad are splitting off to compete closer to home, jumping at the 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and Texas State’s Bobcat Invitational.

Live results will be provided online by Delta Timing<https://live.deltatiming.com/meets/32798> and the meet will not be streamed.

LAST TIME OUT

The Bears had their first complete outdoor meet of the 2024 season at home in the Clyde Hart Classic. BU pocked seven overall wins with two additional collegiate titles. Taking home overall wins were Alexis Brown (long jump, 100m), Ellie Hodge (1,500m), Demar Francis (400m), Rachel Hickey (800m) and both 4x100-meter relay groups. The women’s 4x400-meter relay and De’montray Callis (100m) were the highest-finishing collegiate athletes in their competitions.

PUT EM ON WATCH

BU may only be one meet into the season, but two program records have already fallen. Alexis Brown leaped out to a 21-11 mark in the long jump to take down a record that was just shy of 20 years old, while Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi threw for 271-8 to beat his preview record of 266-6 set the 2022 NCAA West Regional meet in Fayetteville, Ark.

IN THE NATIONAL RANKS

Alexis Brown’s 21-11 is No. 1 in the NCAA so far this season, and she leads five other BU entries in the top 10 marks in the NCAA. Demar Francis bolted out to a 45.90 for third, the women’s 4x100 is fourth, the men’s 4x100 is fifth and the freshman pole vaulters Molly Haywood and Alencia Lentz are tied at No. 8.

¿POR QUÉ NO LOS DOS?

Baylor won both the Men’s and Women’s Athlete of the Week honors from the Big 12 Conference for Demar Francis’ and Alexis Brown’s efforts at the Clyde Hart Classic.

Francis took the men’s honor after putting the fourth sub-46-second 400-meter race in the DI performance list for the 2024 outdoor season. Running a conference-leading 45.90, he beat out defending Big 12 400 champion Zarik Brown of Oklahoma, with the third-fastest mark in the country.

Brown earned the nod after completing the program record sweep of both the indoor and outdoor program records in the women’s long jump with a mark that is No. 1 in the country. Returning a day later in the 100 meters, she also put the 11th-fastest mark in the nation down, winning the event with an 11.42-second race.

THROWING IT OVER TO GHANA

Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi competed in the African Games, hosted by the University of Ghana, last weekend for his home country of Nigeria. The two-time All-American won the men’s javelin throw with a program record-setting mark of 271-8, a throw that is just under nine feet shy of the 2024 Paris Olympics entry standard.

VAULTING IN THE LONE STAR STATE

The pole vault squad, led by Coach Brandon Richards, will be staying in Texas to compete at the 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and Texas State’s Bobcat Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Molly Haywood and Alencia Lentz, the vaulters tied for eighth in the nation, will compete in Saturday morning’s University Elite section of the women’s pole vault at Mike A. Myers Stadium at 11 a.m. Parker Brannon, Katelyn Andrews, Lillianna Ifft and Tenly Kuhn all compete in San Marcos.
