HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Baylor baseball (7-13) dropped its midweek matchup at Sam Houston (14-7) Tuesday night by a final of 18-3 at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville.

The Bears were unable to overcome a 12-run third inning by the ‘Kats, who sent 17 men to the plate and tallied nine hits in the frame.

After two more SHSU runs came across in the fourth, three BU pitchers held the Bearkats to just one run over the final 4.2 innings in senior right-hander Grant Golomb, redshirt junior righty Andrew Petrowski and junior right-hander Will Glatch.

Fifth-year senior infielder Mason Greer, senior infielder Daniel Altman and junior infielder Tyriq Kemp each collected RBIs for Baylor, while senior catcher Harrison Caley hit the first triple of his Baylor career. Junior outfielder Wesley Jordan extended his team-leading on-base streak to 12 games, reaching three times in five plate appearances with a hit and two walks.

THE RUNDOWN
SHSU got on the board early with a two-run home run and scored another run on a passed ball in the first inning to take a quick 3-0 lead.

Baylor responded in the third with a run of its own, as Greer knocked in Caley with a sacrifice fly.

However, SHSU broke things open with a 12-spot in the bottom of the third from which BU never recovered. The Bearkats added a pair of runs to its tally in the fourth with two RBI doubles, extending the advantage to 17-1.

In the top of the sixth, Baylor threatened for a crooked number but settled for two runs after Altman walked with the bases loaded and Kemp delivered a sacrifice fly.

An RBI single in the bottom of the seventh pushed across the game’s final run as Sam Houston snapped BU’s three-game win streak in head-to-head matchups between the Bears and the Bearkats.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On recovering after allowing a big inning…
“It was an inning that definitely got away from us. From then on, we were just trying to battle and compete a little bit. There were moments of good stuff that happened after that, I thought Grant Golomb was good. It was good to see Will Glatch get back out there and have a good inning. There were a few swings that were pretty good tonight, too. But, a tough night and not how we envisioned it.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (7-13, 2-4) turns its attention to a weekend series at Texas (12-8, 2-1) which begins on Friday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. from UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
