WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis defeated VCU on Thursday night at the Hurd Tennis Center, taking down the Rams, 4-2, in front of a Community Day crowd of 356.

With the Thursday night win for BU, the Bears rise to 13-3 overall and 9-1 at home, while the Rams fall to 7-6.

THE RUNDOWN

In doubles, VCU’s No. 31-ranked duo German Samofalov and Oscar Pinto Sansano defeated Tadeas Paroulek and Devin Badenhorst, 6-3, on Court One.

Arman Zamani and Ethan Muza took court three, 6-4, leaving it up to Christopher Frantzen and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen to secure the doubles point for the Bears in a tight one, 7-6(5).

The two teams traded points in singles, the Bears taking three courts ahead of VCU’s two.

Badenhorst notched a win on court two, defeating Pinto Sansano, 6-4, 6-4, and VCU responded with a win on Court Four, 6-1, 7-6(2). Muza took down Samofalov on Court Six, 7-5, 6-4, to put the Bears one away, and the Rams’ No. 70-ranked Matisse Bobichon followed with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, win on Court Three to return the deficit to one.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Michael Woodson

On steady performances Thursday from Bowden and Paroulek…

“Matches like [Louis Bowden’s] and Teddy’s [Paroulek] allow us to win. We have to stay out on the court to apply pressure to the other guys. When we’re up 3-1, all three courts are out and you only have to win once, that’s a lot different from being 1-3 down, even if maybe they’re up on a couple courts. So I give Louis a ton of credit, it was a great performance.

On the quick turnaround hosting Omaha on Friday afternoon…

“We’ve been dealing with sickness for too long, and to be without guys like Zsombor [Velcz] and Luc [Koenig] was tough today. So we ask the question, who’s the next man up? What are we going to do? I mean, Arman [Zamani] and Ethan [Muza] were insane in doubles. Such a great performance against their two best players and took that one, which was awesome. Ethan stepped right in in singles and did a great job, and Marko [Miladinović] has been playing really good tennis, too. It’s a quick turnaround, but I feel like we need to compete. We need more matches. We need to go all out there and lay it on the line, and I give our guys a ton of credit. As you can see at the end, the fitness is next level from our guys. A ton of credit to Cole Durham and our staff for getting our guys into a position where they feel great at the end of a three-hour match. Yeah, we’ll be ready for tomorrow. It'll be a fun one. They’re tough.

UP NEXT

The Bears have a short turnaround before Friday afternoon’s matchup with Omaha at 3 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
