HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Baylor women’s golf shot a 14-over 298 to finish in 17th place in the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Monday at Long Cove Club.

Sera Hasegawa continued her strong play, coming off a 3-0 performance at the T. Hession Regional Challenge. The junior carded an even-par 71 to lead Baylor and finish in a tie for 21st. She enters Tuesday four shots off the lead of 4-under 67, held by LSU’s Ingrid Lindblad and Mississippi State’s Julia Lopez Ramirez.

No. 20 Arizona State shot a 6-under 278 to lead by three over No. 18 Duke and No. 12 Northwestern.

THE RUNDOWN
Hasegawa opened her round with a bogey at No. 10 but closed her outward nine strong with a pair of birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 to make the turn at 1-under. She got to 2-under with a birdie at No. 3 but fell back to even with bogeys at Nos. 5 and 8.

Rosie Belsham shot a 3-over 74 in the opening round to finish in a tie for 56th. An early bogey at No. 11 and another at No. 16 cost her a couple of shots on her opening nine. She settled in with 10 pars over her next 11 holes to finish the day, with the only blemish coming as a bogey at No. 6.

Ashleen Kaur also tied for 56th on the heels of a 3-over performance on Monday. The freshman got to 1-under with an early birdie at No. 12 but made the turn at even after a bogey at No. 17. A double cost her two shots at No. 1, and she made one final bogey at No. 6 to close out the day.

Silje Ohma shot an 8-over 79 to finish the first round in a tie for 80th. She played her first six holes at 5-over par with a double bogey at No. 10, followed by bogeys at Nos. 11, 13 and 15. Her first birdie of the day rolled in at No. 16 to make the turn at 4-over. A bogey at No. 3 and a triple-bogey at No. 4 cost her four more shots. She played the final five holes at even par with a birdie at No. 5 and a bogey at No. 7.

Yoonjeong Huh shot a 12-over 83 and finished Monday in a tie for 88th. She played her outward nine at 10-over with triple bogeys at Nos. 10 and 12, with bogeys at Nos. 11, 14, 16 and 18. She played her inward half, seven shots better, shooting a 2-over 38.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Sera Hasegawa tied for the best par-5 scoring average on day one (4.33).
  *   Rosie Belsham tied for the third-most pars in round one (15).

QUOTABLE
Head coach Jay Goble — “This course will expose you if you are not ready to commit to every shot,” he said. “We have not played a three-round stroke play event since October, and it showed. We will regroup and be ready to improve for tomorrow.”

WHAT’S NEXT
The Bears will play bright and early Monday morning alongside Georgia and No. 12 Northwestern beginning at 8:20 a.m. CT. Huh, will lead things off for the Bears, followed by Ohma at 8:30 a.m. Kaur will hit the first tee at 8:40, followed by Belsham at 8:50 and Hasegawa at 9:00 a.m.
