BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – No. 1 Baylor acrobatics and tumbling continues its two-meet road trip in New York on Tuesday with a meet at Long Island in the Pratt Recreation Center, starting at 5 p.m. CT.



The Bears (4-0) face the Sharks (0-2), who are in their inaugural season.



BU gets back on the mat just two days after defeating No. 15 Iona in New Rochelle by 19.42 points. Against the Gaels, Baylor recorded season highs in compulsory toss (9.90) and synchronized pyramid (9.95), the pyramid also serving as the meet’s high score. Freshman Payton Washington continued to shine in her solo tumbling pass, the six-element, scoring a 9.925 for the second time this season.



The duo of base Bayley Humphrey and top Jordan Gruendler continue to amaze as they competed another new skill against Iona in seven-element acro, with Gruendler popping off from a hand-to-hand connection with Humphrey into a hand-to-foot connection, called a “corbit” in acrobatic gymnastics. The duo also successfully competed the “pencil” in the inversion heat of pyramid, where Gruendler starts in a handstand, removes a hand, and then effectively slenderizes into the “pencil” before dismounting.



The Bears are currently on a 31-meet winning streak, dating back to March 27, 2021.



LIU is coached by Shelby Armstrong, a former student-athlete of Baylor head coach Felecia Mulkey when she was at Oregon. The Sharks opened their inaugural season against fellow new team Iona on Feb. 14 before facing Quinnipiac on the road. The meet with Baylor will be LIU’s home-opening meet.



Mulkey says that competing in two meets mere days apart helps her team prepare for the Championships later in the season, where the Bears will have three full meets back-to-back en route to the title.
