EUGENE, Ore. – Baylor track and field opened up the 2024 NCAA DI Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field with five team points on the board.
Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi recorded his third-straight All-America honor in the javelin throw, while Nathaniel Ezekiel was the only entry on the track to punch his ticket to Friday’s final round during the semifinals with an automatic spot in the 400-meter hurdles.
THE RUNDOWN
Prosper Nnamdi had his best throw of the day on the first attempt, landing at 246-3 for fourth place in the men’s javelin throw, an event won by Georgia’s two-time champion Marc Minichello at 264-9. The junior from Nigeria completes his third collegiate season as a three-time All-American in all three attempts.
Ezekiel led Heat One of the men’s 400-meter hurdles down the stretch with the fourth-fastest time of the day to book his ticket to the finals scheduled for Friday night at 9:27 p.m. CT. The 48.93-second race marked the seventh sub-49-second mark of his career and the third of the season. Texas Tech’s Caleb Dean ran the top time in the semifinals, a 48.05.
The sprint and relay seasons came to an end at Hayward Field on Wednesday evening, as the Bear entries in the 100, 200, 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays did not clock qualifying finishes to Friday’s final rounds.
De’montray Callis was three spots out of finals consideration in the 100 meters after 10.27 seconds and took 16th in the 200 meters ahead of Laurenz Colbert in 20th.
The relay squads sandwiched the day on the track, as Ricquan Graham, Colbert, Kamden Jackson and Callis clocked a 38:88 in the 4x100 for 11th place. The 4x400 saw Jackson, Demar Francis, Ezekiel and Nicholi Brown go 3:07.00 for 16th in the final event of Day One.
WHAT’S NEXT
The Baylor women kick off their championship meet on Thursday evening, as the 4x100-meter relay takes the track at 7:32 p.m. CT. Fans in Waco can continue watching the meet on ESPN2 with individual field events on ESPN+.
