LEADING OFF

• Baylor Baseball begins a season-long, nine-game homestand on Tuesday against Lamar with a 4 p.m. first pitch.

• The Bears are coming off a winless weekend at the Shriners Children's College Baseball Showdown, where they lost 4-1 to Nebraska, 7-4 to Oregon and 11-5 to No. 5 Tennessee. All games were played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

• Baylor received a pair of great starting pitching performances from Mason Marriott<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/mason-marriott/13001> (5.2 IP, H, ER, 10 K's) and Collin McKinney<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/collin-mckinney/13004> (4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 5 K's) against Nebraska and Oregon, respectively.

• Marriott was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for his efforts, the first weekly award of his career.

• BU is facing the nation's toughest schedule statistically through March 14, according to Pro Baseball Radar, based on 2023's RPI and win percentage.

• Baylor plays 26 games against the RPI top-50 this season, the most in the Big 12.

SERIES HISTORY vs. LAMAR

• The Cardinals won the most recent meeting, 9-2, in Waco last season on May 10.

NO MORE ROOM AT HOTEL MARRIOTT

• Junior RHP Mason Marriott<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/mason-marriott/13001> was fantastic as Baylor's Opening Day starter on Friday against Nebraska.

• The native of Tomball, Texas went 5.2 innings and allowed just one run on one hit with two walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.

• He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and ultimately took a no-decision after exiting in a tied 0-0 ballgame.

• Marriott's 10 strikeouts were the most by a Baylor starter on Opening Day since Shawn Tolleson fanned 11 against Duke on Feb. 19, 2010.

• Marriott cruised through the Nebraska lineup early, retiring the side in order in four of his first five frames.

• He worked around a pair of walks in the top of the second to strand a runner in scoring position, then retired the next 10 he faced, including striking out the side in the top of the fifth, just one pitch shy of an immaculate inning.

• Marriott's award marks the second in the Thompson era and 44th Big 12 Pitcher of the Week accolade in program history.

• Tuesday's game will be televised on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, with Pete Sousa (play-by-play) and former Chicago White Sox pitcher Kelly Wunsch (color analyst) calling the action.

• Fans can also tune in to the Baylor radio broadcast on 104.9 FM KBHT, featuring Derek Smith and Tom Barfield, who rejoins the broadcast booth after calling the action in 14 previous seasons from 2002-15.

NEW BEARS ON THE BLOCK

• 14 Bears made their Baylor debut over the opening weekend of 2024, including 10 players making their Division I debut and six freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

• Nearly half of BU's 2024 roster is comprised of newcomers, as 20 new Bears join the fold this spring.

• The newcomers include eight freshmen, six junior college transfers and six additions from the transfer portal.
