ABILENE, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis went 2-0 in its Sunday doubleheader, split between ACU’s Teague Special Events Center and Eager Tennis Pavilion. The Bears (10-1) trounced McMurry (1-5) by only allowing five games in the 7-0 sweep of War Eagles and defeated ACU (6-6) for the second time this season in a 6-1 decision.

THE RUNDOWN – MATCH ONE

Finishing in what would’ve been record time if not for the three-court indoor facility, Baylor jumped out on Sunday morning and took down McMurry, 7-0. The Bears swept doubles with three 6-0 decisions, as Ethan Muza and Justin Braverman finished second to clinch the point.

Singles play was split with the first three courts playing at once and then Courts Four through Six following. Marko Miladinović struck first with a double-bagel over Mason Bagwell before Muza collected one of his own at No. 1 from Nicolas Villalovos. Martin Breysach was the clincher as he defeated Eh Kuh Soe, 6-1, 6-1.

Courts Four, Five and Six finished in that order, with Arman Zamani tabbing the final double-bagel result of the Sunday over Eli Frosch. Christopher Frantzen held back Jack Greenwald, 6-0, 6-1, and Justin Braverman sped through his second set, 6-2, 6-0, over Joen Gregory.

MATCH TWO

The Bears picked right back up where they left off earlier in the day, sweeping all three doubles courts. Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz saw their first action of the day in a 6-1 win at one just before Breysach and Frantzen picked up their second win of the day, 6-2, to secure the point. Finishing out, Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Zamani took Jose Maria Rastrojo and Merse Deli to a 6-3 result.

Miladinović put up the most dominant win of the second match, finishing first at 6-0, 6-2, over Martin Delindo. Devin Badenhorst held off Cesar Barranquero, 6-1, 7-6(0), for the eighth-straight win of his freshman campaign in as many tries. Louis Bowden clinched win No. 2 for BU, defeating the only Wildcat to record a win in the season opener, Deli, in straight sets.

Luc Koenig took down Merse’s brother Mihaly Deli, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while Paroulek wrapped up a 6-3, 7-6(4) battle on Court One over Dario Kmet for the Bears’ sixth team point in the match.

The only opponent win on Sunday came in the form of a gritty three-set match on Court Five. Dennis Dutine fought back mid-second set to defeat Breysach, 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.

HIGHLIGHTS

  * Baylor moves to 10-1 on the season, the second-best start in the last 10 seasons.
  * BU’s match against McMurry was the team’s fifth sweep of the year.
  * The Bears have won both ends of their doubleheaders in all three attempts this season.
  * Freshman Devin Badenhorst leads the team with eight singles wins in 2024, boasting a perfect 8-0 record.
  * Tadeas Paroulek/Zsombor Velcz and Devin Badenhorst/Luc Koenig all lead the team with six doubles wins.
  * Five games won by the War Hawks was the fewest allowed in a match since Baylor defeated Bryant in Waco on May 8, 2015. In that match, which was stopped after the clinch, Bryant only won four games: two in doubles and two in singles, split between two courts.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Michael Woodson

On today’s doubleheader…

“The goal for today was to get a lot of competition in. We've got 12 guys itching and ready to compete and that’s why we came out here to Abilene. We really got exactly what we were looking for. Our guys focused really well on the first match, and McMurry fought and played hard throughout. We did a really good job of playing our game all the way through from start to finish. Moving to the afternoon, I was really impressed with how he came out in doubles with great energy, physicality and aggression to kind of run away with it. It was impressive, given a good crowd that was it was loud. It was just a great college tennis environment, which was a lot of fun. We got up on many courts in singles and kind of ran away with most of the first sets. You have to give a ton of credit to Abilene. They fought back on many of the courts and turned into a solid college match. Those guys from ACU compete really hard and they're very, very well coached and just keep getting better every time I see them. I thought we did a great job in a couple of tiebreakers to not go to a third set. Credit to Marko [Miladinović] for just handling his business out there at six and Louis [Bowden] for stretching his lead on four. We were able to come up with two solid victories today and excited to get back to Waco.”

UP NEXT

The Bears host a doubleheader in Waco next Sunday, facing SMU at 1 p.m. and UTRGV at 6 p.m.
