THE RUNDOWN
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Baylor soccer battled with No. 18 Mississippi State in its season opener, narrowly falling, 1-0, Thursday night at MSU Soccer Field.

Mississippi State struck first in the match, netting its first goal in the third minute to take the early lead.

The Bears were able to get their first shot of the match off in the 8th minute when Skylar Zinnecker lined up a shot that was blocked by the Bulldogs.

The Baylor defense and goalkeeper Azul Alvarez defended 10 more shots in the half with three blocked shots and two saves.

Tyler Isgrig and Theresa McCullough accounted for the Bears’ other two shots in the first half, but another block and a goalkeeper save kept BU off the board.

With a yellow card issued to Mississippi State two minutes into the second half, Isgrig took the penalty kick but the shot was blocked by a defender to result in a corner kick. The Bears were able to take another corner less than two minutes later but weren’t able to capitalize.

Baylor was able to limit the Bulldogs to just six shots in the second half after giving up 11 in the first half. In goal, Alvarez was only tested once in the second half, making a save in the 55th minute.
