WACO, Texas – Former Baylor baseball infielder Davis Wendzel was called up by the Texas Rangers on Monday.

A native of San Clemente, Calif., Wendzel was added to the Rangers’ 40-man roster and selected by the big-league club after playing nearly 300 games in the minor leagues over the last five years. Wendzel will be available for the Rangers in their series finale Monday night against the Houston Astros. He will wear number 38.

A third-team All-American in 2019, Wendzel was a career .326 hitter during his time at Baylor and was drafted in the first round, 41st overall, by the Texas Rangers in the 2019 MLB Draft. He began his professional career by playing seven games with two teams in 2019, including four with the Arizona League Rangers and three with the Spokane Indians in short-season Class-A ball.

After the minor league season was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wendzel made his Double-A debut with the Frisco Roughriders in 2021 and hit .239 there in 45 games. He made a brief appearance with the Triple-A Round Rock Express at the end of the ’21 season before spending the entire 2022 and 2023 seasons there, where he hit a combined 47 home runs and drove in 125 runs over two years.

This year, Wendzel got off to a hot start at the plate, batting .314 in nine games with three home runs and eight RBIs for the Express before getting the call up to the big-league squad.

When he debuts, Wendzel will become the 48th Bear all-time to play in the big leagues and the fifth on an active 40-man roster, joining left-handed pitcher Cody Bradford (Texas Rangers), catcher Shea Langeliers (Oakland Athletics), infielder Nick Loftin (Kansas City Royals) and infielder Max Muncy (Los Angeles Dodgers).

The 2019 Big 12 Player of the Year, Wendzel hit .367 in 46 games as a junior with eight home runs and 42 RBIs on his way to a trio of third-team All-America honors. He finished his collegiate career as a three-time All-Big 12 performer after hitting .301 with eight home runs and 30 driven in as a freshman in 2017, and batting .310 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs in his 2018 sophomore season. Wendzel remains Baylor’s career leader in on-base percentage during Big 12 play with a .464 clip.
