FRANKLIN, Tenn. – In her second collegiate tournament, Baylor freshman Ashleen Kaur carded seven birdies and shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round of the Mason Rudolph Championship.

The Bears finished day one with a 12-over 300, placing them at 17th in the team standings. Kaur’s top-five finish helped the Bears surpass Florida Atlantic by five shots and kept Baylor competitive with College of Charleston. Baylor sophomore Silje Ohma scored second for the Bears with a 5-over 77.

Auburn leads the tournament at 14-under 274, just three shots clear of Arizona State. Auburn’s Ami Gianchandani sits on top after carding an 8-under 64, just three shots clear of Kaur.

THE RUNDOWN
Kaur started strong on her first nine with four birdies on Nos. 11, 14, 17 and 18. Her only two blemishes for the round came from two bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3. The Houston native bounced back with a birdie on No. 4, and ended the day carding pars on Nos. 6, 7 and 9 around two birdies on Nos. 5 and 6. With seven birdies, she sits tied for fourth entering Saturday.

Ohma placed second for the Bears at 5-over 77 and is tied for 77th individually. Her first nine was an up-and-down ride with four bogeys on Nos. 11, 12, 15 and 16, a triple bogey on No. 13 and two pars on Nos. 10 and 14. The Norwegian battled back, carding three birdies in a row on Nos. 17, 18 and No. 1, putting her at 4-over. After a par on No. 2, she made a bogey on No. 3, which canceled out a birdie at No. 4. Ohma finished the round with three pars on Nos. 5, 7 and 9, surrounding a double bogey on No. 6 and a birdie on No. 8.

Baylor’s Yoonjeong Huh claimed a bogey at the start, followed by three pars. Her triple bogey on No. 14 was followed by three bogeys to put her at 7-over as she made the turn. Her second nine started with a bogey on No. 1, coupled with a birdie on No. 2. After five-straight pars, she made a birdie on No. 8 before one last par to end the round for a 6-over 78.

Junior Sera Hasegawa started strong with a birdie, but carded four bogeys to end her first nine at 3-over. She sat at over-3 for her first two holes of the second nine, and made a bogey on No. 3, a birdie on No. 4, a double bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 6 to finish with a 6-over 78.

Senior Rosie Belsham stayed even for the first three holes, but carded bogeys on Nos. 13, 14, 16 and 17. She made the turn at 4-over and stayed there until No. 4, where she carded a second eagle of the season, bringing her back to 2-over. With two pars on Nos. 5 and 8, two bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7, and a double bogey on the last hole, Belsham finished the round at 6-over 78.

Huh, Hasegawa and Belsham are all tied for 86th.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Kaur shot her lowest collegiate round with a 5-under 67, surpassing her Day 1 score of 4-under 68 at the Annika Intercollegiate.
  *   Kaur leads the field in par-5 scoring average (4.00).
  *   Belsham was one of just four players to card an eagle in the first round.


STAT OF THE DAY:

67 — Ashleen Kaur is the first freshman to shoot a 67 on a par-72 course since Rosie Belsham and Nina Lang at the 2021 Lone Star Invitational.
