WACO, Texas – The 14th-ranked Baylor volleyball team is ready to face SMU in Dallas for a Wednesday night match at the Moody Center, with first serve set for 7 p.m.



BU (1-2) visits the Mustangs (2-3) for the first time in the regular season since 2013, but faced them in a spring scrimmage this past April. The Bears lead the all-time series, 6-4, but SMU leads the series on their home court, 3-2.



The Mustangs’ head coach, Sam Erger, comes from Ryan McGuyre’s coaching tree, having served Baylor as an assistant coach and rising in the ranks all the way to associate head coach before taking the SMU role in the spring of 2022. She was McGuyre’s first hire when he earned the head job with the Bears in 2015. She was previously the director of operations for BU volleyball prior to McGuyre’s hiring.



BU is coming off a 3-1 win over then-ranked No. 18 Rice at the Ferrell Center, where the Bears put up 15 total blocks against the Owls. Manuela Bibinbe earned her first Big 12 weekly accolade on Tuesday, garnering the Co-Defensive Player of the Week honor after putting up seven total blocks, four of them solo. Bibinbe and the defense held Rice to a .007 hitting percentage in the match.



Wednesday will be the home opener for the Mustangs, who swept the host Florida State Seminoles in the Seminole Invitational before finishing the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Auburn. Both Florida State and Auburn were receiving votes in the AVCA poll.



SMU has eight newcomers on the 2023 roster, including six transfers and two freshmen. The Mustangs have a veteran-laden roster, while the Bears are mostly fresh faces.
