KAPOLEI, Hawaii – Baylor men’s golf fired one of the top-10 rounds in program history with a 19-under 269 to end day one of the Kapolei Invitational in second place.

Trey Bosco tied for third with a 6-under 66 to lead the Bears, followed closely by Luke Dossey and his 5-under 67.

The Bears are a shot back of the pace set by Florida Gulf Coast and its 20-under 268, while Loyola Marymount’s Riley Lewis and UC Irvine’s Jason Tang share the individual lead with a pair of 7-under 65.

THE RUNDOWN
Bosco opened with a birdie at No. 1, but gave it back with a bogey at No. 2 to sit at even through his first two holes. The senior picked up a birdie at No. 7 to make the turn in red figures. Bosco caught fire on the back nine with five birdies at Nos. 10, 13, 15, 17 and 18 to card his career-low round and finish day one tied for third.

Luke Dossey carded a 67 for the fourth time in his career and the first time since the Trinity Forest Invitational last fall. The senior blistered the front nine with birdies at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 8 to record a bogey-free 32 on the front side. Dossey's first blemish of the day came with a bogey at No. 13, but he got it right back with a birdie at No. 14. His final bogey came at No. 16 before he finished strong with birdies at Nos. 17 and 18 to finish tied for 11th.

Johnny Keefer carded his fourth round in the 60s this season with a 4-under 68. Playing out of the No. 1 spot, Keefer started strong with a birdie at No. 1 and followed it up with three more on the front side at Nos. 3, 5 and 8 for a 4-under 32. A birdie at No. 10 put him at 5-under for the day before his first bogey at No. 16 dropped him back to 4-under. A birdie at No. 17 and a bogey at 18 put him in the clubhouse in a tie for 17th.

Zach Heffernan also carded a 4-under 68, his first round in the 60s this season. Following a bogey at No. 3, the junior made the turn in red figures with birdies at Nos. 4 and 7. Two bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 dropped him back over par, but he closed with a furry, playing his final seven holes at 5-under. A birdie at No. 12 kickstarted things, and after an eagle at No. 14, Heffernan finished with two more birdies at Nos. 16 and 17.

Jonas Appel ended Tuesday in a tie for 37th on the heels of a 2-under 70. Appel wrapped a couple of birdies at Nos. 4 and 7 around a bogey at No. 6 to make the turn with a 1-under 35. A bogey at No. 10 dropped the sophomore back to even par before he finished strong with birdies at Nos. 11 and 17.

Tyler Isenhart led BU’s five individuals with a 4-under 68 to tie with Heffernan and Keefer in 17th place. Luke Morgan finished Tuesday tied for 82nd, Pato Gonzalez tied for 89th, Sam Dossey tied for 94th and Davis Ovard tied for 101st.
