HOCKLEY, Texas– Baylor men’s golf finished day one unbeaten at the Big 12 Match Play on Monday at Houston Oaks.

The Bears opened with a 4-1 win over UCF and capped the day with a 3-2 win over Iowa State. Trey Bosco, Zach Heffernan and Johnny Keefer all finished day one with two wins in two matches.

The Bears picked up seven match points, which tied TCU for the most in the field on day one. The Bears and Horned Frogs will meet to decide the winner of Pool C on Tuesday morning.

THE RUNDOWN
Morning Session
Keefer clinched the morning match against UCF with a 2&1 win over Gustav Andersson. The junior for the Knights opened with a win on No. 10 to take a 1-up lead, but Keefer responded with 3-straight wins to take a 2-up lead. The senior picked up wins at Nos. 16, 1 and 2 to take a 5-up lead. Andersson whittled the match down to 2-up with two holes to play, but Keefer ended the match when the two carded birdies at No. 8 to halve the hole.

Luke Dossey topped UCF’s Hans Risvaer 1-up, to claim a point for the Bears in the morning session. The pair traded wins in the first two holes to keep the match square, where it would stay until Dossey picked up a win at No. 16 to go 1-up. Risvaer tied the match with a win at No. 18, but Dossey got it right back with a win at No. 1. The two traded the lead until Dossey took it back for good with a win at No. 8.

Trey Bosco scored a 2&1 win over Egor Eroshenko in the morning session. The senior picked up his first win on his fourth hole of the day at No. 12. He built his lead to as many as 3-up at No. 17. Eroshenko trimmed it to 1-down through 15, but Bosco took back control of the match with a win at No. 16 and would close it out with a halve at No. 17 for the 2&1 win.

Zach Heffernan contributed to one of Baylor’s four wins with a 3&1 win over Chase Haygood. The duo traded wins in the first two holes and remained all square until a Heffernan win at No. 16 briefly gave him back the lead. After making the turn all square, Heffernan picked up two quick wins at Nos. 3 and 4, and after a Haygood win at No. 5, the Boerne, Texas, native closed the match with wins at Nos. 6 and 7.

In his career-first match, Davis Ovard fell 1-up to Nicholas Estrada. Ovard went 1-up through two holes before Estrada squared the match at No. 10. The junior from UCF took his first lead at No. 12, but Ovard wrestled it back to even at No. 14. Estrada went back to 2-up through 11, but wins by Ovard at Nos. 2 and 3 got things back to even. UCF's lone point came as Estrada picked up a win at No. 4, and the pair halved the final three holes.

Afternoon Session
Keefer sealed the match for the second-straight session, this time with a 2&1 win over Iowa State's Zach May. The senior picked up wins on each of the first two holes before pushing his lead to 3-up through five. Making the turn at 2-up, Keefer won No. 10 to get back to 3-up, but May would not go away, scratching out wins at Nos. 11 and 13 to get to 1-down. Keefer picked up a win at No. 15 to get back to 2-up, where the match would finish with a couple of halves.

Trey Bosco picked up his second win of the day with a 3&2 win over Lukas Pany in the afternoon session. Bosco never trailed in this match and held the lead for the final 12 holes after a win at No. 6. His lead reached 4-up with four holes to play, but Pany stayed alive with a win at No. 16. A pair of pars at No. 17 ended the match 3&2.

Playing alongside Bosco, Heffernan also collected a 3&2 win in the afternoon session against Iowa State's Dianchao Wu. Heffernan faced an early 1-down deficit but picked up wins at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to take a 2-up advantage. Wu would trim it to a 1-up advantage through nine, but Heffernan took control of the match with back-to-back wins at Nos. 11 and 12 before closing out WU on the 17th green.

Davis Ovard dropped his afternoon match 1-up against Owen Sawyer. Ovard took an early lead after a win on his first hole of the day at No. 3. His lead surged to 2-up through 12, but wins on three of the final five holes would flip the match in favor of Sawyer and the Cyclones.

Luke Dossey dropped his afternoon match 2-up to Luke Gutschewski. The junior from Iowa State took a quick 2-up lead through four holes before Dossey battled back to tie it after six. Two down through eight holes, Dossey flipped the momentum in the match with wins at Nos. 9, 10 and 11 to take a 1-up lead. Wins by Gutschewski at Nos. 15, 17 and 18 sealed the match in favor of the Cyclones.
