Story lines

  * Baylor soccer continues Big 12 play this week, as they host Iowa State on Thursday, Oct. 5, before heading to Orlando, Fla. to face UCF on Sunday, Oct. 8.
  * Thursday’s home match will help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and will feature a post game celebration for senior Madison Martin.
  * The 2023 season marks the 27th season of the Baylor Soccer program. During that time, BU has won four Big 12 titles, advanced to two Elite Eights and had four All-Americans to go with countless All-Big 12 and Academic All-Big 12 honorees.
  * This season also marks the second year of the Michelle Lenard coaching era, as she was selected as the Bears sixth head coach in program history in December of 2021.
  * The Bears are 6-5-2 on the season so far, coming off of a road trip to Kansas, where the Bears posted back-to-back shutouts in conference play.
  * Through the first seven games of the season, the Bears have compiled seven shutout wins and have scored 20 goals. BU’s seven shutouts are the most in a season since 2021 when the Bears finished with eight.
  * Ten different players have scored this season as Baylor has used a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defensive effort to total 20 goals and seven shutouts.
  * Four newcomers have scored goals so far this season: Callie Conrad, Skylar Zinnecker, Theresa McCullough and Natalie Vatter.
  * Thirteen different Bears have recorded a point this season, with both Tyler Isgrig and Ashley Merrill with 14 points on the season. Merrill has seven goals and Isgrig has four goals and six assists.
  * Goalkeepers Makinzie Short and Ashlee Zirkel have split time in goal this season.
  * Five Bears have recorded their first-career goals so far this season. The most recent coming from Theresa McCullough when she netted her first career goal against Kansas State.
  * Against Kansas State, the youngsters of the BU women’s soccer squad came up clutch with two sophomores and two freshmen connecting on goals to help the Bears win. Less than seven minutes into the game, Hannah Boughton fed Hannah Augustyn for her first goal of the season and just before halftime the freshmen duo of Callie Conrad and Theresa McCullough connected to give BU the 2-0 lead that the Bears would hold on for their sixth shutout of the season.
  * BU’s seven goals against ACU this season was the first seven-goal game since Sept. 18, 2016, when the Bears beat Jackson State at home, 7-0.
  * Also, in the win over ACU, Ashley Merrill recorded the first hat trick for the Bears, since Taylor Moon did so on March 27, 2021, vs Louisiana.
  * Merrill now ties Baylor records with three second-half goals and six second-half points. Her three goals in under four minutes is the fastest hat trick in Baylor soccer history. She also has now scored in five matches so far this season.
  * When Iowa State comes to town, it will be the 31st meeting between the two programs, the second-most head-to-head matchups in BU history (next to Texas). In those previous 30 meetings, the Bears hold a 20-8-2 head-to-head mark, including winning six of the past seven meetings dating back to 2017. The 20 head-to-head wins is the most over any opponent in program history.
  * The Bears and UCF Knights will be facing off for the first time in program history on Sunday.
