AMES, Iowa – The 18th ranked Baylor volleyball squad swept Iowa State, 3-0, at Hilton Coliseum in the second of back-to-back matches to even the season’s series between the Bears and Cyclones.

BU (7-6, 0-2) held strong against ISU (12-3, 3-1), going 12-8, 25-22, 25-17 after battling and falling in five sets on Saturday.

Kyndal Stowers led BU in kills with 18 while Lauren Briseño had 15 digs. Three players had three blocks each in Allie Sczech, Alicia Andrew and Manuela Bibinbe. Four different players had a solo block against Iowa State.

Head coach Ryan McGuyre has often said that “the better team wins the second night” when it comes to back-to-back matches, and BU is now 14-1 in that situation. This is only the third time for the program that the Bears have lost the first night and come back to win the second, and the third different team it has happened against since back-to-back began in 2020. The previous were against Kansas and Texas Tech, in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

THE RUNDOWN

Set 1

Andrew started the match for BU with a kill and then Stowers, 2-2. Bibinbe had a big swing for a kill followed by Elise McGhee as the team swapped points. Andrew got another kill, then Elise, then Stowers. A service error from ISU tied it again at 8-8 before Stowers pushed the team forward with back-to-back kills, 10-8. A Cyclone kill and block tied it again and the teams each produced service errors to put ISU up by one, 12-11. McGhee had two kills with an attack error from the Cyclones to go up by two, 14-12. Stowers tooled the block, McGhee had an emphatic kill, but Iowa State’s Nayeli Gonzalez had a kill before her team had an attack error. Sczech tooled the block, 18-15, and then ISU had two more errors before they got their next kill out of the timeout, 20-16. Bibinbe and Stowers killed balls, then Bibinbe again to go up 23-17. Iowa State had a kill but McGhee made it set point. The coffin was nailed as McGhee and Andrew finished the set with a block, 25-18.

Set 2

The Cyclones started the second frame with an ace but a bomb from Stowers quieted Hilton. Bibinbe got the next kill and then got another to make it 5-4, ISU. She then served up an ace to tie it at 6-all. After an attack error, Andrew got a kill off a block error to tie it at 8-8, then push the Bears ahead with another at 9-8. A service error from the Cyclones was followed by a monster of a hit from Stowers, 11-9. Sczech chimed in with a big swing to go up 12-11. Stowers got a kill at 14-13 and McGhee began to pop off, getting a solo block to tie it at 14-all. She then got the kill at 16-15 and Stowers kept the Bears within one at 17-16. After Sczech tied it and Stowers pushed to put Baylor ahead 18-17, Iowa State called their first timeout of the set. The Cyclones tied it, but McGhee put her team back in front. Stowers and Sczech got the kill for the 20th point and then Stowers had a solo block at 21-19. After two-straight attack errors from Cyclone Maya Duckworth, she got a kill, but Stowers made it set point, 24-20. Iowa State was able to put it off twice, but Stowers closed the book, 25-20.

Set 3

McGhee started the third set with a kill, then ISU had a kill followed by a service error. Andrew and McGhee got the block to make it 3-1, then it was 4-2 with a McGhee kill. The “Allies”, Andrew and Sczech, teamed up for the block at 5-2 and Stowers furthered the lead with a kill off a tooled block. Sczech swung for the kill at 7-3 and again at 9-4. Stowers put BU up by five at 10-5. Two Baylor attack errors was followed by back-to-back service errors from the squads and an ISU kill, the score now 11-9. Stowers got a kill and Sczech had a solo block to up the momentum, 13-9. A Cyclone kill was answered with a Sczech kill and then that sequence repeated, Sczech tooling a block, 16-13. Stowers and McGhee got kills and then Bibinbe had two big swings for the Bears, 20-13. Back-to-back ISU attack errors had the ‘Clones reeling when Bibinbe got a solo block, now 23-13. ISU got two points but Bibinbe made it set point out of a timeout. Iowa State’s Nayeli Gonzales had a kill to hold off the Bears for a play but it wasn’t enough as McGhee finished the match, 25-17.

QUOTABLE – Ryan McGuyre, Head Coach

“Good response for us on day two, I thought we were a lot more consistent even though serving was rough in the first set and we steadied out in the last two sets. Our passers did an exceptional job, I thought we were able to side out really well. Averi did a great job moving the ball around. Some early kills by Allie Andrew, Manuela stayed very relevant and all the pins hit at a very high clip and were really productive. There are areas we can get better at but on the road, it’s good to get a 3-0 sweep. Big 12 is really competitive this year so I thought we took a step forward toward growing up this season. I’m looking forward to the next opponent.

Kyndal Stowers, Freshman OH

“We were all going at it [after yesterday’s match, saying], ‘we are not feeling like this again’ and tried to fix all the things we couldn’t do right yesterday and tried to complete it today. We looked at the film from yesterday and we had way too many missed serves, and that was one thing we were not going to let happen again because that’s too many free points for the other team. And then on top of that, they were really attacking our block yesterday and just getting points by hitting at our hands so we came into the gym and said ‘we’re not getting tooled that many times again’ because our defense is way too good to let balls just go off the block, so we focused really heavy on getting our hands over the net and just killing their hitters on everything.”

NEXT UP

The Bears host Kansas State for back-to-back matches in Waco on October 5-6.
