WACO, Texas – The 20th-ranked Baylor volleyball team fell short to TCU on Saturday night at the Ferrell Center, 3-2.



BU (14-10, 8-6) saw their lead against TCU (14-12, 7-8) slip away in five sets. Another neck-and-neck match with the Frogs started with the Bears taking set one, 25-20. Set two was all Baylor, taking it 25-14. Two sets under their belt, TCU fought back and took set three 25-22, then 26-24 and the final set 16-14.



The Bears were led by Elise McGhee with a career-high 22 kills, Averi Carlson had another double-double with 53 assists and 12 digs, and McGhee led in blocks with five. Tehani Ulufatu led the team in aces with three. Sophia Keene led the Bears in digs with 16.



THE RUNDOWN

Set 1

TCU got the first kill of the set but the Bears started off strong with kills from Allie Sczech and Alicia Andrew to make the score 3-3. Manuela Bibinbe, Sczech, and Andrew got a series of kills that preceded an ace by Ulufatu which brought the score to 9-4 with the Bears in the lead. Baylor maintained their lead with back-to-back kills from McGhee and more kills from Andrew, Bibinbe, and Sczech, bringing the score to 16-8. Sczech, McGhee, and Andrew dominated the rest of the set with multiple kills each and Sczech scored the set point for the Bears, closing out with a score of 25-20.



Set 2

McGhee got the ball rolling for the Bears with back-to-back kills, taking them to a 3-2 lead to get the momentum going. Andrew and Bibinbe brought the heat with one kill each to take the Bears to a 5-4 lead and the Bears were on a run with the lead. A service and attack error by the Horned Frogs brought the score to 7-5 followed by back-to-back to back kills from McGhee. After extending the lead to 10-6, a series of attack and service errors brought the score to 13-9 with the Bears still in the lead. The Frogs began the comeback with three kills in a row but the Bears came back but the Bears held them off with a service ace by Lauren Briseño and two attack errors by the Frogs, taking the score to 17-12. Kills by Sczech and Bibine with another Frog attack error and a team service ace got the Bears even closer to taking the second set, extending the lead to 21-13. A McGhee kill and a block by Bibinbe and McGhee took the Bears to set point. Another block from the dominant duo of Bibinbe and McGhee won the second set for the Bears, holding TCU to 25-14 to close out the second set.



Set 3

TCU came out early leading the set 2-0, but the Bears responded with a team service ace and three kills in a row by Bibinbe that brought the score to 7-6 with the Frogs still in the lead. An attack error by TCU brought the set to 7-7 which was immediately followed by back-to-back McGhee kills, putting the Bears back in the lead with a score of 9-7. Another Elise McGhee kill gave the Bears a two-point lead bringing it to 10-8, but the Horned Frogs responded with two kills to tie the set 10-10. Two straight Sczech kills put the Bears back in the lead 12-11 which was followed by a Bibinbe block and another Sczech kill. A series of kills by TCU tied the set 14-14, but a service error by the Horned Frogs put the Bears back in the lead. The lead continues to go back and forth with a kill from TCU and a set of attack errors on the Bears, bringing the score to 19-16 with TCU in the lead. The Bears began the comeback with kills by McGhee and Sczech and an attack error by TCU, tying the set 20-20. Kills by Andrew and Bibinbe kept the Bears within two points of tying the set. With back-to-back kills from the Horned Frogs, they take the set 25-22.



Set 4

Looking to get the early lead, some service errors by TCU and a kill by McGhee put the score at 3-2 to start the set. A kill by Bibinbe ties the set 6-6 but after a series of service and attack errors the bears fall 10-7. The Bears began their comeback with two kills by McGhee and two TCU service errors, but after a series of Baylor attack and service errors coupled with some kills by the Horned Frogs, TCU held their lead 15-13. Sczech and Bibinbe each getting a kill that was immediately followed by a McGhee and Bibine block. Sczech kept the momentum going, getting a kill and tipping it to take the score to 21-20. Manuela Bibine kept the party going with two kills for the Bears and an attack error on the Frogs tied the set 24-24. Two Baylor attack errors helped TCU win the set 26-24, taking this match to 5 sets.



Set 5

With a kill by TCU and the Bears to start the set, a block by McGhee and Andrew followed by a bad set took the bears to a 3-1 lead. TCU tied the set 3-3 with a service ace but an attack error gave the lead back to the Bears. The set continued to go back and forth but an Allie Andrew kill, an attack error by the Horned Frogs, and a Bibinbe kill put the Bears ahead 7-5. Two TCU kills tied the set 7-7, but Bibinbe responded with a kill taking the score to 8-7 with the Bears in the lead. Riley Simpson kept the momentum going with a kill and a service ace by Ulufatu, taking the lead to 11-7. Riley Simpson extended the lead by one with a kill, but a service error and a kill by TCU took the score to 12-10 with the Bears still in the lead. McGhee came in hot with a kill to take it to 13-11, but two kills and a service ace by the Horned Frogs and a Baylor attack error puts TCU in the lead 14-13. A service error on TCU ties the set 14-14, but the Frogs take the lead with a kill to make it 15-14. A final kill by the Horned Frogs wins them the set and the match with a final set score of 16-14.



HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Three Bears had double-digit kills in McGhee, Sczech and Bibinbe
  *   McGhee broke her career-high in kills with 22
  *   Four Bears had double-digit digs – Carlson, Keene, Alexis Dacosta and Ulufatu
  *   Carlson had a double-double with 53 assists and 12 digs
