OKLAHOMA CITY – Baylor’s Shaylon Govan was named the 11th All-American in Baylor history, voted to the National Fastpitch Association (NFCA) All-America second team, announced by the organization on Wednesday afternoon during a press conference at the Women’s College World Series.

Govan is the first All-American selection for the Bears since Jessie Scroggins in 2018. Her second-team distinction is just the seventh second team or higher honor for the Bears.

A sophomore from Katy, Texas, Govan led BU with a .369 batting average, 11 home runs and 54 RBIs on the season. She is the first Bear to reach double-digit home runs since 2019. She also led the Big 12 in walks while holding a .513 on-base percentage.

In her first season as a Bear after transferring from SFA, she started in 56 games, missing just two after tearing her labrum in a game against Oklahoma State. She etched her name into the Baylor record books, setting single-season records in walks drawn (46) and sacrifice flies (7) and was third in single-season RBIs (51). Govan also ranked third nationally in sacrifice flies and fifth nationally in walks per game (0.84).

Helping lead the Bears to their first 40-win season since 2017, including six top-5 wins, Govan hit the three-run homer that propelled the Bears to a 4-3 non-conference win over No. 1 Oklahoma, earning her a Big 12 Conference Player of the Week honor. She hit .571 with three homers and 10 RBIs, which also led the country that week with 2.07 runs batted in per game.

Becoming Baylor’s top power hitter, six of Govan’s 11 home runs this season were multi-run blasts, including a three-run homer in the Bears 9-1 run-rule of No. 5 Texas and a grand slam against No. 7 Arkansas.

Doing it all on the field, she played first base while having a conference-leading 375 chances with 360 putouts and ranking second in the conference in fielding double plays (24). She helped the Bears to a new single-season record in double plays turned (31). She also made one appearance in the pitching circle for the Bears, striking out two in BU’s win over UTA that gave head coach Glenn Moore his 1,000th career win.

Baylor’s program has now had 11 All-Americans, and Govan’s selection marks the 14th overall, with Brette Reagan as Baylor’s only three-time selection and Whitney Canion a two-time honoree.

Govan was a unanimous All-Big 12 first-team selection and an All-Region first-team selection.
