SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Baylor men’s golf wrapped up round one of the NCAA Championships in 30th place after a 24-over 304 on Friday.

Tyler Isenhart led the team with a 3-over 73, his second-straight tournament to record the Bears’ best score in the first round. Isenhart is nine shots back of the overnight leader, Ross Steelman of Georgia Tech.

The Yellowjackets are leading the team standings after an even-par 280, one shot better than Pepperdine and Arkansas. Just five shots separate 10 teams at the top of the leaderboard.

THE RUNDOWN
Isenhart’s 3-over 73 put him in a tie for 70th. The senior got off to a good start, dipping into red figures with a birdie at No. 5. He gave it back with a bogey at No. 6, but made the turn with a 1-under 34 on the heels of a birdie at No. 8. After three pars to open the back nine, Isenhart fell back to even with a bogey at No. 13. The Geneva, Ill., native made a bogey at No. 17 and found the water with his second shot on No. 18 to close out his round with a double bogey.

Johnny Keefer shot a 5-over 75 to finish Friday in a tie for 87th place. The senior started strong with a birdie at No. 4, part of a 1-under 34 on the front nine. He opened the back nine with a par at No. 10, but carded a double-bogey seven at the 11th. Keefer closed with three more bogeys on his final six holes at Nos. 13, 14 and 18 to finish round one.

Luke Dossey finished Friday in a tie for 143rd. The senior played his first five holes at 4-over par with bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5, around a double-bogey at No. 4. He closed the front nine with one more bogey at No. 7 for a 5-over 40 on the front nine. Dossey settled in on the back nine with seven pars to start, interrupted only by a bogey at No. 13. But he was forced to take an unplayable lie on the 18th hole, resulting in a double bogey at the last hole to drop two more shots.

Drew Wrightson carded a 9-over 79 to finish the first round in a tie for 147th. The sophomore made a bogey at the first and followed it up with two more at Nos. 3 and 7 to close out the front nine with a 3-over 38. Following a par at the 10th, Wrightson made a couple of bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12, before a wayward tee shot resulted in a triple-bogey six at No. 13. After the triple, he recorded four-straight pars and one final bogey at No. 18.

Zach Heffernan also shot a 79 on Friday to finish tied with Wrightson in 147th place. The sophomore played his first eight holes at 4-over par with bogeys at No. 2, 3, 5 and 7, but closed the front nine with a par for a 4-over 39. Following a par at No. 10, Heffernan played his next three holes at 5-over with a bogey at No. 11 and double bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13. He played his final five holes at even par, highlighted by a birdie at No. 14.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Johnny Keefer and Tyler Isenhart each played the front nine at 1-under par.
  *   Isenhart’s 73 beat the field average by .24 strokes.

With his opening-round 73, Tyler Isenhart led BU in scoring in the opening round for the second-straight tournament.

The Bears will tee off on No. 10 Saturday in the second round, playing alongside Arkansas and Duke beginning at 2:47 p.m. CT. Zach Heffernan will be first off, followed by Luke Dossey at 2:58 p.m. Tyler Isenhart tees off at 3:09 p.m., ahead of Drew Wrightson at 3:20 p.m., and Johnny Keefer in the anchor position at 3:31 p.m.
