PULLMAN, Wash. – Baylor women’s golf wrapped up day one in a tie for fourth at the NCAA Pullman Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

Sera Hasegawa spent much of her afternoon near the top of the leaderboard, sharing the lead for stretches on Monday, before carding a 4-under 68, good enough for a tie for ninth. Rosie Belsham went bogey-free with a 2-under 70 and finished tied for 18th.

Stanford blistered Palouse Ridge on Monday with a 21-under 267 to lead by five shots over Southern California. BU's 5-under 283 is within six shots of third-place Texas Tech and four shots clear of ninth-place Kentucky.

THE RUNDOWN
Hasegawa opened with seven-straight pars but climbed the leaderboard quickly with three-straight birdies at Nos. 8-10 to grab a share of the lead. She made two more birdies at Nos. 15 and 17 to keep pace at the top but gave a stroke back with a bogey at No. 18 to card a 4-under 68.

Belsham opened with eight-straight pars before making the turn in red figures with a birdie at No. 9. The junior rolled in seven more pars to start the back nine and went to 2-under with a birdie at No. 17, part of a bogey-free 70 to finish in a tie for 18th.

Hannah Karg shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 30th. Following five-straight pars, the senior dropped over par with a bogey at No. 6 but made the turn under par with an eagle at No. 9. She opened the back nine with a birdie at No. 10 but dropped three shots with bogeys at Nos. 13, 15 and 16. Karg closed strong with a birdie at No. 18 to give BU its third score of even par or better.

Silje Ohma made her NCAA postseason debut with a 1-over 73 to finish tied for 42nd. After an opening bogey, she made three more at Nos. 4-6 to drop to four over through six holes. She settled in with a pair of birdies at Nos. 7 and 9 to get back to 2-over on the front nine. A bogey at No. 11 was her lone blemish on the back nine, and she closed with a short eagle putt at No. 18 to get back to 1-over.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble: “We need to continue to remind ourselves that this is not a sprint, it's a marathon. We have two more rounds to get in position to qualify, which is all that matters. The great thing about golf tournaments is that the cream rises to the top, and good teams find a way to make their way near the top of the leaderboard, and I don't think we're far away from that. We had a busy and stressful week in Waco, with the players all finishing exams and everything before we left, so it doesn't surprise me that we were not at 100% today, but I saw a lot of good things. I think we're going to clean some things up for tomorrow.”

Goble on Hasegawa and Belsham: “Sera did a great job. I know she's a little disappointed in her finish, but one thing that she does is she stays in the present really well, and she doesn't get ahead of herself. Rosie did an amazing job today of controlling her emotions, which is tough to do. There's a lot of pressure this week to go out and play well, and I think Rosie did a good job of keeping in her routine and mindset and just playing the shot in front of her.”
