WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball head coach Mitch Thompson has appointed Director of Operations Darin Thomas to serve as acting head coach in his absence for Friday night’s series-opening game against Mercer.

Thompson will miss the game to attend the funeral services of a family member out of state. He is expected to return for Saturday’s afternoon contest against the Bears.

Thomas, the former head coach at UT Arlington, has 404 career wins at the Division I level from his 15 seasons with the Mavericks. He will handle all managerial duties, while hitting coach Zach Dillon will run the offense and pitching coach James Leverton will handle the pitching staff.

First pitch between the Bears and the Bears is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
