No. 22 Baylor MGOLF Tied for Third After Round One of the Cabo Collegiate

LOS CABOS, Mexico. – Baylor men’s golf got off to a good start Sunday against a loaded field at the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club, finishing day one tied for third after a 4-over 288.

Johnny Keefer carded the only bogey-free round of the day, a 1-under 70, to pull into a tie for fourth after 18 holes. Keefer has recorded a round at par or better in the first round of each tournament this spring.

Baylor is tied with No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 3 Arizona State, eight shots back of first-place No. 1 Vanderbilt. Keefer is three shots back of Arkansas' Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira, the individual leader after round one.

THE RUNDOWN
Keefer started at No. 15, and after three pars to open the round, he made a birdie at No. 18 to get into red figures. From that point, Keefer finished with 14-straight pars to polish off his 1-under 70.

Tyler Isenhart took a bit of a different route to his 1-over 72 on Sunday. The senior made just six pars on the day. He opened with a bogey at No. 16. After a pair of pars, Isenhart made a double-bogey at No. 1, but responded with birdies on three of his next four holes to get back to even par. The Chicago native opened his final nine with bogeys at Nos. 7 and 9 before responding with birdies on three of his next four holes to dip into red figures for the first time. He would bogey his final two holes to drop back to 1-over for the day and tied for 17th.

Drew Wrightson finished a shot back of Isenhart following a 2-over 73 on Sunday. The sophomore made a bogey on his second hole of the day at No. 17 but got the stroke back with a birdie at No. 1. After six-straight pars, Wrightson dropped another shot with a bogey at No. 8 to fall to 1-over. A triple-bogey eight at No. 10 dropped him to 4-over before a birdie at No. 12 and an eagle at No. 13 brought him back to 2-over and tied for 25th.

Trey Bosco shot a 73 on Sunday to finish tied for 25th with Wrightson and seven others. Bosco made a birdie at No. 17 to open the round but got a stroke back with a birdie at No. 1. A bogey at No. 4 and a birdie at No. 5 put him at even-par through seven holes, at which time he made a double-bogey six at No. 6 to finish his first nine at 2-over. After a bogey on his 10th hole of the day at No. 8, he made birdies at Nos. 10 and 13 before a bogey-bogey-birdie finish.

Luke Dossey shot a 6-over 77 in round one. He opened his round with a double-bogey six at No. 18 but got a stroke back with a birdie at No. 1. From that point, he played his next eight holes at 7-over par with bogeys at Nos. 2, 3 and 7, a triple bogey at No. 4 and a double-bogey at No. 9. Dossey finished his round strong, though playing his final eight holes at three under with an eagle at No. 13 and a birdie at No. 17.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Keefer has opened each of his last three events with an under-par round.
  *   Keefer led the field with 17 pars on Sunday.
  *   Tyler Isenhart tied for the best par-3 scoring average in round one (2.75).
  *   Isenhart had the second-most birdies in the field in the first round.
  *   Luke Dossey had the second-best par-5 scoring average on Sunday (4.00).
  *   Dossey and Drew Wrightson were two of five golfers who made eagles in round one.
  *   Baylor was the only school in the field to have multiple players make eagles on Sunday.

STAT OF THE DAY
Johnny Keefer’s bogey-free 70 was the only bogey-free round in the field on Sunday.
