DURHAM, N.C. – Baylor baseball (2-5) fell in the series finale at Duke (5-2) by a final of 10-3 Sunday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

BU’s sophomore RHP Mason Marriott struck out a career-high seven batters in a career-long 4.2 innings of work, but the Bears were unable to hold off Duke’s late rally as the Blue Devils scored six in the bottom of the eighth to break it open.

Freshman C Zach Mazoch had two hits, including a two-run single, and sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky added a pair of knocks as well in the loss.

THE RUNDOWN
Duke opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single, but the Bears responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to go in front. With the bases loaded and two down in the inning, Mazoch singled up the middle to drive in the first runs of his collegiate career.

However, the Blue Devils answered right back in the bottom half to chase Marriott, as an RBI single preceded a run-scoring wild pitch to give Duke the lead back, 3-2.

Baylor showed some more two-out fight in the sixth as John Ceccoli reached on an error, then scored all the way from first on Teplanszky’s RBI double that rattled up against the left field wall. With the game tied at 3-3, junior RHP Cole Stasio buckled down on the mound to strand a pair of Blue Devil baserunners and come up with a huge strikeout to end the sixth.

In the seventh, Duke took advantage of some BU miscues as a passed ball and a dropped fly ball in the outfield allowed the go-ahead run to score. Then, after striking out three times in the top of the eighth, the Bears couldn’t hold down the Blue Devils offense as they scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to break the game open.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s game…
"I thought that we came out and competed really hard. I thought Mason Marriott gave us a really nice start on the mound. Cole Stasio was good out of the bullpen. But Duke continued to run good arms out there at us and we struggled with it some. We’re going to have to continue to get better. We either win or we learn, and we’ve definitely got to learn. This is not how we want to go through this thing. This is not what we want to see happen ever again. Duke gave us everything to learn from. But I liked our fight and I’m proud of the way the guys fought.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (2-5) returns home to begin a 14-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 28, against UTSA (5-2). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
