WACO, Texas – No. 25 Baylor softball took down Texas A&M Commerce twice Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lions, 7-3, in game one and 9-2, in game two at the Baylor Invitational.

The Bears, who are now 12-1 on the season, played the last game of the round robin against Texas A&M Commerce, before turning around and playing them again in the one seed vs four seed matchup. BU is now 4-0 in the Baylor Invitational and plays in the championship match up tomorrow.

Commerce threatened in both matchups but Baylor was able to rally and take over in both games.

The Bears’ 12-1 record is the best start to a season since 2011, when the Bears opened 14-0 and went on the WCWS semifinals later that year.

THE RUNDOWN

In game one, the Bears got on the board in the bottom of the first after a sacrifice fly from Shaylon Govan. Baylor scored again in the second after back-to-back doubles from Josie Bower and Shannon Vivoda, and put the Bears up 3-2.

BU added insurance in the fifth, when Vivoda hit her second hit of the day, a single to left-center, that scored Ashlyn Wachtendorf. Bower then scored on an error and Zadie LaValley singled to bring home another run.

Govan notched her second homer of the weekend in the bottom of the sixth to complete the Bears seven runs. Texas A&M Commerce added a run in the seventh but the bears took game one, 7-3

The Bears didn’t get any runs across in the second game until the third inning when Govan homered again to right field and brought McKenzie Wilson home.

Adding more runs in the fourth, the Bears plated six to go up, 8-2. Leading to those runs were Taylor Strain who had a two-RBI single, a defensive error, back-to-back doubles from Govan and Hott and a single from Kaci West.

The Bears added their last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, when Hott tripled down the left field line, scoring Jensen Vienne.

HIGHLIGHTS

Govan continued to be a force in the batter’s box, going 4-for-5 at the plate, while notching to homeruns and three RBI.

The Bears in total had 23 hits on the day and seven batters had a multi-hit day.

Recording their first-career hits today were Jensen Vienne who had one and Shannon Vivoda who had three.

Baylor didn’t have a single batter strikeout in game one against the Lions

Dariana Orme, Kaci West and RyLee Crandall all combined in the circle throughout both games, and struck out 15 combined.

WHAT’S NEXT

Baylor will play the championship game at the Baylor Invitational against Minnesota at 11 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 26 at Getterman Stadium.
