PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Baylor women’s golf slipped to sixth place following the second round of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

As the stroke average jumped from 74.46 to 74.79 in round two, Silje Ohma and Rosie Belsham had the low rounds of the day for BU, a pair of 2-over 73s. The Bears shot a 13-over 297 for the day.

Top-ranked Stanford used an even-par 284, the low round of the day, to rise to the top of the leaderboard and take a two-shot lead over No. 3 San Jose State. BU enters the final round nine-shots back of the leaders at 11-over 579 for the championship.

THE RUNDOWN
Ohma made an early double bogey at No. 2 and added a bogey at No. 4 to drop to three over through four holes. Her first birdie of the day came at No. 7 as she made the turn at 2-over 37. A second bogey of the day dropped her back to plus-three, but she rallied with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 12 and 13. Bogeys at Nos. 15 and 17, sandwiched around a birdie at 16, settled Ohma into fourth place at 4-under, three shots back of the top-ranked player in the country, Stanford’s Rose Zhang.

Belsham fired a 2-over 73 of her own to climb into a tie for 22nd after 36 holes. The junior started strong with five-straight pars and a birdie at No. 6 to shoot a 1-under 34 on the front nine. Turning to the back, Belsham bogeyed Nos. 10, 13, 15 and 16 before close with a birdie at No. 17 to get back to 2-over for the day.

Sera Hasegawa shot a 4-over 75 on Monday pulling into a tie with Belsham at 4-over for the championship. Following four-straight pars to open the round, the sophomore stumbled with a pair of bogeys at Nos. 5 and 6, but finished the front nine with a clean card to shoot a 2-over 37 on the front nine. She made another bogey at No. 11, but got a shot back with a birdie at No. 14. The Gifu, Japan, native finished with bogeys at 16 and 17 before closing with a par at No. 18.

Hannah Karg is tied for 36th after two rounds on the heels of a 5-over 76. The senior made four bogeys on the front nine at Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 9 to go out in 4-over 39. She picked up three shots on the back side with a lone bogey at No. 13 surrounded by eight pars.

Anika Veintemilla shot an 8-over 79 to sit in a tie for 79th entering the final round. She carded five bogeys on the front side at Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6 and 9, before picking up two shots on the back side with bogeys at Nos. 11, 13, 14 and 17 around her lone birdie of the day at No. 16.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   BU leads the field in par-3 scoring average after two rounds (3.18).
  *   Sera Hasegawa is one of three players under par on the par-3’s this week.
  *   Silje Ohma is one of seven players under par on the par-4’s this week.
  *   Ohma’s 10 birdies are tied for the third-most in the field.


STAT OF THE DAY: Monday was just the second time in 11 rounds this season that Sera Hasegawa did not shoot par-or-better.

WHAT’S NEXT
The Bears will be grouped with No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 Texas and No. 15 Arizona in Tuesday’s final round. The round will be an 10:15 a.m. CT shotgun start with the Bears spread out across holes No. 6, 7 and 8.
