SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Baylor cross country begins its season on Friday night at the Classics Elite Soccer Complex for the UIW Twilight.

The Bears hit the course for the 2023 season with a lineup featuring seven newcomers in Kira Dietrich, Kat Helmer, Rosanna Pugh, Nolan Keenan, Straton Miller, Aiden Ramshaw and Kanalu Wong. Of those, Dietrich, Kennan and Wong dawn the green and gold for the first time in their hometown of San Antonio.

“[The newcomers] have a sense of urgency,” said head coach David Barnett. “They know that their best opportunities are going to be early in the season. And if they want to have more, they have to make the most of these. I’ve been really pleased with their efforts so far.”

The scheduled lineup also features returning conference and regional scorers Hayden Gold, Jordan Ledington, Devin Duran and Ryan Hodge to lace up for another cross country season.

Jackie Addy, Chloe Gangnath, Anna Garner, Abby Morris and Alaina Zamorano also return for Friday’s women’s 4,000 meters, while Caleb Ackman and Zach Zawatski will run again in the men’s 6,000 meters.

Friday night’s meet opens the four-meet regular season as the team preps for the Big 12 Championships hosted in Ames, Iowa, before running at the NCAA South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., for a spot at the NCAA Championships in Charlottesville, Va.

The 2023 season rings in the third season for Barnett and the second for assistant coach Abbie Fredrick as the Big 12 expands and adds UCF’s women’s-only squad, Cincinnati, Houston and a BYU program with six team and five individual championships under their belt.

“In year three, you want to just keep making progress – conference-level progress; regional progress; hopefully have some people go to Nationals,” said Barnett. “Last year, we had a couple of people that were all-region for the first time. We just want to keep making progress. Everyone’s just trending in the right direction.”
