LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 18 Baylor Softball claimed the series victory with an 8-5 win over Texas Tech Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.

The Bears, now 34-10 on the season, take home their second conference series win of the season.

Ana Watson went yard for the second-straight game, lifting Baylor to the early lead in the top of the first.

THE RUNDOWN

The Bears wasted no time getting on base in the series finale, with McKenzie Wilson leading off the game and reaching on an error and advancing to second on a passed ball, before Shaylon Govan was hit by a pitch to put two on. Bringing home the first run was Sydney Collazos, who doubled to right-center field to plate Wilson.

With one run already in, Ana Watson picked up where she left off after yesterday’s game, and hit a three-run bomb to put Baylor up 4-0. Kaci West also doubled in the top of the first, but that would be all for the Bears.

Baylor was able to hold the Red Raiders scoreless through the first two innings, erasing a runner with a double play in the first inning and recording back-to-back strikeouts to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the second.

Texas Tech came within a run of the Bears in the bottom of the third, after back-to-back home runs plated three runs for the Red Raiders.

Both teams were silenced in the fourth inning, before Baylor put up two more runs in the fifth. Govan led off the inning with a double to right-center and Collazos walked before pinch-runner Caroline Rowatt moved to third on a wild pitch. With one-out and runners on the corners, Emily Hott singled through the right side, giving Baylor the 5-3 lead. After another walk and a trip to the bullpen for the Red Raiders, a pop-up had the bases loaded with two outs when TTU walked in the Bears’ sixth run.

Texas Tech got within a run again in the bottom of the sixth, when two runs scored on a double and an obstruction call at the plate.

With the narrow 6-5 lead, Baylor added some much-needed insurance in the top of the seventh, after a single from Wilson and a double from Amber Toven plated two more.

Coming in to close out the game, Dariana Orme struck out two in the bottom of the seventh, including the game-ending strikeout to secure the Bears’ win.

QUOTABLE

Head Coach Glenn Moore

“This was a wild and crazy weekend. No lead seemed to ever be enough for either team. You have to have a whole different philosophy and approach to the game up here. I thought we did what we needed to do and I will take a series win on the road in this league any day”.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Bears will return home to face the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners for a three-game conference series, April 21-23.
