AZUSA, Calif. – Baylor track and field’s Annamaria Kostarellis and Ryan Day broke the program 5,000-meter records late Friday night at the Cougar Athletics Stadium in Azusa Pacific’s Bryan Clay Invitational.

Kostarellis was first up, running a 15:39.16 to set a new program record by under a second, overtaking Rachel Johnson’s mark set in 2014 at Stanford. She finished eighth-overall in the first heat of the women’s invitational section.

Day’s new 5k mark of 13:52.70 is a six-second improvement on the oldest record in the BU outdoor book, a 1970 race by Pete Morales in Des Moines, Iowa. Day’s time put him at 12th place in the fourth section of the men’s invite-only race.

Also competing was Ryan Hodge in the fourth open section. Hodge ran a 14:22.31 and ended up in 19th place for his section.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Bears finish up at the Tom Jones Memorial at the University of Florida on Saturday.
