WACO, Texas - No. 18 Baylor Softball took down Louisiana, 2-1, Tuesday night at Getterman Stadium.

The Bears, now 31-9 on the season, defeated a Ragin’ Cajuns team that is ranked higher than the Bears in the NCAA RPI standings at No. 10.

Baylor was backed by a home run from Emily Hott that gave the Bears the 2-1 lead, as she notched her second long ball of the season.

THE RUNDOWN

Louisiana threatened in the top of the first with a leadoff single and stolen base that put a runner at third base, but an unassisted groundout ended the inning. BU also got a pair of runners on after a walk and a single from Sydney Collazos but weren’t able to convert a run in the first.

After a scoreless second, the Bears sat the Ragin’ Cajuns down in order in the top of the third before getting on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

After McKenzie Wilson drew a leadoff walk and stole second, Amber Toven singled to right field, putting runners on the corners for the Bears. After a flyout, Collazos collected her second hit of the game, a single through the right side, which plated Wilson and gave BU the 1-0 lead.

Louisiana tied the ballgame in the top of the fourth when a leadoff solo home run knotted the game at 1-1, before the Bears sat the next three batters down in order.

Emily Hott wanted in on the long-ball action and knocked a leadoff solo shot of her own over the wall in right field to give the Bears the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

The Ragin’ Cajuns got two runners into scoring position in the fifth, but Taylor Strain made a running effort to capture a fly ball in foul territory for the last out of the inning.

Shaylon Govan and Presleigh Pilon each recorded hits in the next two innings for the Bears, but a 2-1 lead was all the Bears needed to take down Louisiana, with a three-up, three-down top of the seventh sealing the deal.

HIGHLIGHTS

  * Five different Bears recorded a hit in the outing
  * Sydney Collazos and Emily Hott each had a multi-hit game, recording two hits apiece
  * Dariana Orme pitched her 12th complete game of the season, striking out four and not walking a single batter
  * The Bears, now 31-9, have their best record at this point in the season since 2017 then they were 34-6
  * Coming into the game, Louisiana was 10th and Baylor was 19th in the latest RPI rankings

QUOTABLE

Head Coach Glenn Moore

“Yes, this is a good team. I had hoped it would be a close game because they’re ranked higher than us (in RPI) and it’s somewhat of an upset. Not that we think it’s an upset, but whenever a team comes in and they’re at 10 in the RPI rankings and they’re ahead of you, that’s considered an upset. I knew if we were going to have a chance against a team of this caliber then we’d need to keep it close, which is exactly what Dariana (Orme) and our defense did. I am really proud that we had some good situational hitting tonight and of course the home run by Emily (Hott) was big to answer their home run. I thought it would be a close game between two equally matched teams. I’ve been watching them on film for a little while, spent a lot of time Sunday watching them and thought we matched up pretty well against them. They had a little more power than we do, they have good speed and a little more pitching depth, but we throw our top 10 or 12 out there, we can compete with them and be in their league.”

WHAT’S NEXT

BU will then venture to West Texas for four games, facing Abilene Christian on Thursday at 3 p.m. before a three-game series at Texas Tech, April 14-16.
