WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (10-19) took care of business on Tuesday night against Stephen F. Austin (13-14) with a 10-3 victory at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

Junior INF/OF Cole Posey, junior OF Hunter Simmons and sophomore 1B John Ceccoli combined to go 10-for-12 with seven runs scored and six RBIs in the win and reached base a collective nine times. Ceccoli launched his team-leading fifth home run of the season as part of his career-best four-RBI performance.

Four Bears relievers combined to throw six scoreless innings, bridging the gap between SFA’s first-inning and ninth-inning runs. Junior righty Grant Golomb picked up the win with two clean frames, while fellow junior RHP Brett Garcia had a team-high three strikeouts.

With the win, BU snapped its seven-game losing streak and scored double-digit runs for just the third time this season. Thirteen hits matched the squad’s second-highest output of the year and marked its 13th game in double figures, including the ninth time in the last 13 games.

THE RUNDOWN
Though the Lumberjacks got to Baylor starter Jared Matheson for a two-out run in the first, he settled in quickly for a clean second inning. The Bears knotted things at 1-1 in the bottom half as Ceccoli doubled in Simmons with a screamer off the right-field wall.

In the bottom of the third, it was Simmons’ turn for an RBI knock as he chased in Posey to give BU a 2-1 lead early. After going down in order in the fourth, the Bears would add to their lead with a three-spot in the fifth thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Simmons and Ceccoli, followed by a sacrifice fly from junior RHP/OF Cole Tremain.

Ceccoli stayed hot in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run blast that extended Baylor’s advantage to 7-1. When SFA threatened in the eighth, it was Garcia who buckled down to strikeout three ‘Jacks and escape unharmed.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the inning as sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky scored freshman OF Caleb Bergman with a sacrifice fly. Then, freshman INF Kolby Branch collected his first hit of the night, an RBI infield single, that plated Posey. Finally, Ceccoli reached on an SFA fielding error and advanced on a subsequent throwing error, allowing Branch to score BU’s 10th run.

Though the Lumberjacks scored two in the top of the ninth, sophomore RHP Gabe Craig was able to induce a game-ending double play ball and give the Bears their first victory in two weeks.

STAT OF THE GAME
10-7-6 – The number of combined hits-runs-RBIs by Cole Posey, Hunter Simmons and John Ceccoli in tonight’s win.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight’s game…
“I think we took pretty good at-bats, had a good plan. The guys felt confident and they took good swings. I think up and down the lineup we were pretty competitive and the offense started clicking a little bit tonight. It’s a fun way to go into the weekend, scoring 10. I am really proud of the guys and obviously wins feel a lot better than loses, so it was good to get on the right side again.”

Sophomore 1B John Ceccoli
On his home run and the offense’s production…
“It felt pretty good. I just had two strikes on me and I was looking to get something in play out there in the outfield with a runner on second base. I ended up putting a pretty good swing on it and it ended up going pretty far. Any time your offense is able to click one through nine, it’s really fun to watch it happen and be a part of it.”
